Doubtless there are thousands more who have not been appre hended or applied for treatment An overwhelming number of the addicts ,U!,ti54 are men. The drug most widely used is heroin. which is produced by the chem ical treatment of morphine. Inj case his partner could show thrcej aces. South planned to hid six no-trump to stop a possibly dan porous lead through one of his red kings. When North showed four aces. South also had a reason for bid ding seven no-trump instead of seven spades. The game was du plicate and South wanted the ex tra 10 points for making the hand in no-trump. When South looked at the dum my he w ished that he hadn't been quite so ambitious. He could have spread the hand for seven spades, hut there appeared to be only 12 tricks in no-trump. However, with 12 tricks in lopj cards there is always hope for a 13th. South won the heart lead with his king and ran off five spades to see what would be discarded. East's first discard was the four of clubs and South was sure that East had started with five clubs. East's other three dis cards were two hearts and a dia mond and now it appeared that only West could slop hearts. This set the stage for an auto matic squeeze. East was down to three diamonds and four clubs, so South played a heart to dummy's ace and East let a diamond go. Now South ran off three high Hub and West was squeezed He had to discard down to two diamonds in order to hang on to the jack of hearts. Dummy's last heart had done its work South threw it away and made the last three tricks with dia monds. A nwer Tomorrow acidicls are heroin users. Most nf the others use morphine or opium. Pattern Emerges How and why does a person occome a heroin addict? From the thousands of case histories in the federal files, this clear and delinite pattern emerges: The addict does not start w ith heroin, but with one ot the milder drugs such as marijuana. He is attending a party, somebody of- leis nun a marnuana cigarette ana lie enjoys a somewhat dreamy feeling of exaltation. At the next parly lie will smoke two, then three, then four. Drug addiction almost alwavs starts as a result of some kind of iroup activity. The Narcotics Bureau says the only exceptions to that rule are the relatively few doctors and nurses who usually begin their addiction with small shots of heroin taken in solitude. The fact that narcotics are easily available in the doctor's drug cabinet sets up a temptation to seek relief from the irritations and fatigue of a long day. The average drug addict may continue on marijuana for months before the fatal day when some body at the party suggests to him that there is something that will give him a stronger, quicker kick. Shot In Arm A licit is strapped around his arm to make I lie arteries and veins easy to penetrate, he feels the sharp jab of a hypodermic needle and the heroin courses in to his bloodstream. H i s face flushes, the pupils of his eyes con strict and there is a tingling sen sation in his abdomen. Later he may "go on the nod." which means to fall into a fitful sleep, but in any event he has a feel ing that everything in the world is fine and he is the master of his fate. Between two and three hours later it's all over. Somebody sug gests another shot and he takes it, but salvation is still within his own reach if he will just say no. If he goes on taking heroin daily for about two weeks he wakes up one morning and realizes, as the addicts say. that "the mon key is on my back. Then his entire world narrows down to one problem how and where to get more heroin. His family, friends, food, job cease to have any mean ing in his single-minded search for relief. Cost is Great Heroin is a powder, sometimes gray or beige, but in its nuresl form it Is w hile. Its current value in the illicit drug channels is esti mated at SB50 an ounce, but pure heroin does not interest our ad dict because a shot of it would kill him. Day of Reckoning It is inevitable that the day of reckoning arrives when he cannot beg or buy heroin, and then theri sets in what the Narcotics Bureau calls "the living death." Pain is a relative thing and it may be- that some thingsadvanced can cer, for instance can be a worse torture than the need of an ad dict for drugs. But this is the way the Narcotics Bureau describes the agony: "He becomes restless and irri table. His eyes water as though he had hay lever. He yawns and mucus runs from his nose.
