I do not un derstand a few peculiarities of your language. In your article i the other day, you used the phrase "clean ing lady. In I Europe a lady does not clean her own home, much less go out and clean up somebody else's dirt for a few dollars. The picture in my mind of Her Ladyship with dust rags and a broom is like a comic op era. My American neighbors re fer to a woman who sells hair nets in the dime store as a sales lady. Yesterday when my husband and I drove into a parking lot the man said, "Just leave the keys in your car. The lady will take care of it." A person in tight pants came up and that was "the lady." In Europe a lady doesn't scrub doors, sell hair nets or park cars. Work is beneath her dignity. What does "lady" mean here? SWISS MRS. Dear Mrs.: In America we also have people who think work Is beneath their dignity. They are railed loafers. The notion that work l for stubs Is hopelessly outmoded even in Europe. Questions were asked of the eight panelists for 45 minutes in a morning assembly. The high school bowl, which was run much like the regular college! bowl, was sponsored by the Hen Icy Chapter of the National Hnnni- Socicty. The contest was between the juniors and the seniors' and the panelisls are selected from tne Honor hociety. Jo Ann Duffy. Steve Reilino Leo Huff, and Dick Houck were on the senior panel, and Cind Harless. Linda Tavlor. chervl Thurman and Ray Black were the selected juniors. Earl Graham read the qui lions. Macmillan Meet Talked LONDON tUPli Diplomatic speculation revived here Saturday that Prime Minister Harold Mac millan and President Kennedy may meet after all during the latter's forthcoming Europe tour next month. Speculation of a possible inform al "summit" between the two Western leaders was stirred by the invitation of the Northern Ire land government to Kennedy to attend the opening of the Giants Causeway" in Antrim. This event coincides with Ken nedy's tour of Europe which in- ludes visits to Italy. Bonn, Bcr lin. and Dublin. The invitation of the North Ire land government was passed to Kennedy by Macmillan personally, it was disclosed in London. This move has strengthened the belief that Macmillan wants to use the opportunity of the cere mony for a quick meeting w ith the President. British government spokesmen had no otficial comment. The; said they know of no formal ar rangements so far for a top level get-together. But diplomatic sources did not rule rait the possibility of a brief Kennedy-Macmillan meeting of an informal character before long Washington reports reaching here to dale have not encouraged expectations of such a summit The Prime Minister was known In be anxious for anollxr talk with Kennedy. Macmillan was believed anxmus to review a series of major post- Nassau problems with the Presi oent of which the NATO nuclear force was one Mark Signs Relocation Pay Measure Governor Hatfield has signed into law a legislative act per mitting the State Highway De partment to pay. within certain. limits, the moving costs of per sons displaced by highway con struction. Passage of the bill had been requested by the State High way Commission. State Highway Engineer Forrest Cooper pointed out that prior to enactment of this bill Oregon was powerless to pay relocation costs even though permitted to do so by the Federal Highway Act of 1962. He said at least 18 states are now making relocation pay ments as provided under the fed eral law. Any occupant of an improved property will be eligible for reim bursement of his necessary mov ing expenses if he is in occupan cy at the time the state com mences its acquisition procedures. No occupant who takes up tenan- after that time will be eli gible. The Highway Department will pay actual costs up to a max imum of $200 in tlie case of an individual or family, and up to $3,000 in the case of a business farm. Cooper stated that the new law supplements the Highway Depart ment's advisory assistance pro gram which has been in existence since passage of the Federal High way Act. Highway officials anticipate that nearly all eligible persons will ap ply for relocation payments, with the bulk of claims expected from the Portland metropolitan area. Current and future freeway routes in Portland .will displace a num ber of businesses and several hun dred individuals in the next few years. Persons eligible lor relocation payments will be advised by rep resentatives of the Highway De partment well in advance of the lime they must move, lnforma tion on the new program is avail able through the oflice of the Re location Supervisor.
