The Pelicans had to rally in the seventh inning to take the first game. Steve Young was the winning pitcher. He walked only tivo and whiffed ten in allowing only tnree hits to the Cavemen. The first game was tied at going into the seventh. With one out Bob Williams, who had just returned from competing in the track meet, got on first by a tielder s choice which was the sec ond out. Young reached first on an error and Dave Lyman smacked his third single of the day to drive imams home with the win ning run. Lyman had three for four on the day. Alan Kenyon and . Tom Schiff each had two hits. Tho.se Uiree accounted for all sev- ' en hits by the Pels. Hummel got two of the thrae Cavemen hits. Mike McKibben was the hitting hero in the second game with a bases loaded double for three runs to ' win the game. The Cavemen didn't get a hit in the second game. Felipe Alou and Jim Davenport also hit home runs as the Giants extended their road record to eight wins in nine games for the young season. Lefty Bill O'Dcll, who re tired alter six innings because of soreness behind his right shoulder, breezed to his third victory with out defeat. But the young right-hander sneaked a slow cuve past George Mtman (or a third strike to end the threat. In all, Maloney struck out 10 in ;aining his third victory against one defeat. Cancer Defeats Old Pro HOUSTON (UPH-Richard H i Dickey I Kerr, the honest hero of the 1019 World Series, died Satur day of cancer at the age of 60. Kerr died at his home with his w ife. Cora, and a few other rela tives at his bedside. He had been unconscious except for brief spells since Tuesday. Kerr, a rookie pitcher at the time, won two games in the 1910 World Series for the Chicago White Sox while eight of his teammates were frying to throw the scries. Up until the time of his death, Kerr Atill did not understand why he was such a hero to the public when the 1919 scandal broke. It always did seem funny to me that so much fuss could be made over a man being honest Dickey would say. Kerr discovered he iiad cancer when he took a hospital checkup last March. By that time it was loo late to slop it. The only treat ment lie was given were blood transfusions to give him strength. Kerr is survived by his widow: in adopted son. Kay Grant, ot New York; two brothers, Art Kerr of St. lxiuis and Al Kerr nl lirookhne. Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services arc expected lo be held sometime Monday at the Woodridge Baptist church in Houston. Burial will he in the Forest Park Cemetery.
