Newspaper Page TextImproving Pelican Track Team Duels Powerful Grants Pass Saturday The Klamath Union track team, improving u ith each meet, will have its toughest task of the season this week end when the Pelican thinclads travel to Grants Pass for a dual meet with the Cavemen, one of the state's strongest teams. The Pelicans will he meeting the team which surprisingly won the big Hayward Relays meet a week ago in Eugene. The Cavemen have some of the best marks in the state and the Pelicans will be hard pressed to stay with them. Coach Jack Peterson is back with his team alter a layoff be cause of the death of his fa ther. His Pelicans have im proved and could give the Cavemen a tussle if the weath er should turn good in the val ley. The bisgest noise for the Pel icans will come in the form of Walt Smith in the javelin toss. Smith has the best throw in the state 'as far as in known i. He tossed the spear 208 feet 81 indies Tuesday in the coun ty track meet at Modoc Field for a new school record. He reportedly hurled the shaft 213 feel in practice the night before. He will get good support from Bill Mills. Mills will be the favorite in tne shot put and the discus. He set a new school record in the shot Tuesday w ith a heave of 50-8( and whirled the discus lAO't. His competi tion should be closer than Smith's. It will be ironic if Smith doesn't have some good competition because the nation al high school javelin record belongs to Glen Winningham of Grants Pass with a toss of 225-6'i. Smith is gunning for that record. A good high jump duel is ex pected. Grants Pass has some good jumpers in Bob Shepard, Al Hutchins and Terry Cren shaw. The Pelicans can count er with Terry Eccles, Fred Kelley, Dick Scott and fresh man Kurt Petcrstcincr. This could be one of the closer events. Grants Pass probably will take the pole vault with no trouble. Gary Van Kotcn has one of the best leaps in the state at 13 feet. Ray Thome has the top jump for the Pels at 11-6. Van Kotcn is backed up in this event by Tom Sparlin with a 12-9 vault. Arie teUroot will lead the parade of KU sprinters. He was clocked in 10 flat in the cen tury in tlie preliminaries Tues day but lost to a 10.2 in the finals of the county meet to Bonanza's Monte Burnett. He al.- has a 22.0 220 timing. G e r r i 1 1 DeGroot tops the quarter milers with a 52.8. Don Piper has a 52. 5 time from a running start. He also tops the 880 men with a running start time of 2:05.6 and the regular start time of 2:06.7. Bob Scholl tops the milei's with a time of -1:50 flat with a running start. Teammate Steve Lawrence out lasted Scholl in tlie mile Tuesday for a clocking of 4:52.2. Terry Eccles and G rover Dahn are the top broad jump ers for the Pelicans. Eccles has the top jump of 19-6 for the season. John English is tops in the 180-yard low hurdles with a 22.7 timing. But he will be a big underdog to Shepard of Grants Pass who has a brilliant 19.8 clocking. Don Graham tops tlie high timber toppers with a 15.4 best time. The 880-yard relay could be a decent ' race if tlie Pelicans put forth their best fforL Their best time has been 1:36.1 this season, but that is lagging behind tlio 1:33.1 tim ing the Cavemen have record ed. The Pelicans whipped the Griz zlies in the first meeting of the Iwo clubs when Gary Benson and Rich Jackson threw back-to-back i)p-hit games at the Grizzlies to v ,n 11-0 and 7-0. Coach Bill Mans field's team has lost only one league game in a split with Cra ter. The Pels are 5-1 in league and Medford still is unbeaten The Whitebirds are to play Med ford next week in the makeup games. Tlie Pelicans downed Grants Pass Tuesday in a doublcheader at Gem Stadium. The second round asainst the Grizzlies may not be quite as casv as the first go-around and the Pels had bet ter not rest on their first game laurels to beat the Grizzlies. They got 14 hits in 46 at bats against Grants Pass and are now hitting at a .309 team clip. Klamath also has the two lead ing batters in the league accord ing to the latest statistics. The stats have first sacker John Gray hitting an even .500 for the sea son. He ir hitting .440 which in cludes the last two games that the stats do not include. They also have Mike Witching listed at .448. but he has raised his average to .476. He was three for five in the Grants Pass series. Rich Jackson is also among the leading pitchers. He has, not in cluding the 4-3 win he picked up Tuesday against Grants Pass, a 1.29 earned run average which is very good. He also the lead ing strikeout artist of the league with 37 whiffs. He has hurled over 28 innings to gain a 4-0 record. Benson also is among the pitching leaders. The probable starting lineup for the Pelicans against Ashland will be much the same as the Grants Pass lineup. Mansfield probably will go with Benson and Jackson and use them as little as possible so that they might have more rest in case they get to play Medford Tuesday in the makeup games. Gray will open at first base. Lanny Guyer at second. Kitching at short, John Parisotto at third. Larry Rinney in right field, Lar ry Smith in center and Rick Horn in left field. The probable catcher will be eitlier Dave John son or Vern Pelrick. Possibly they may alternate on a game each behind tlie plate. Others who could see action are Tom Osa. Marvin Yunck and pitchers Jim Jackson. Ron Yunck. and Bob Moore.
