The Chicago White Sox took over second place by beating the New York Yankees 6-4 in 12 innings, the Cleveland Indians beat the Boston Red Sox 2-0. the Detroit Tigers nipped the Los Angeles Angels 4-3 in 15 innings and the Minnesota Twins downed the Washington Senators 6-4 in other AL games. In the National League, the New York Mets shut out the Chi cago Cubs 2-0, the St. Louis Card inals 'defeated the San Francisco Giants 4-3 to take over the league lead, the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-4, the Milwaukee Braves shaded the Houston Colts 4-3. and the Los Angeles Dodgers routed the Cin cinnati Reds 7-0. Protest Brings Ejection One balk had been called on Dodger pitcher Johnny Podres1 earlier and after the umpiring team ol Augie Donate!!! called three more on Owens, the Cin cinnati pitcher objected so heat-1 edly b was ejected from the game. The Reds showed their displeas ure by hurling helmets and towelsj onto the. field. Donatelli, steaming himself by then, banished the en tire Cincinnati team but said man ager Fred Hutchinson could sum mon the Reds' players as needed. As matters now stand, National League umpires are cnforcing'lhe rule rigidly the Donatelli team has called 32 balks so far while American League umpires are virtually ignoring it. From his office here, Frick. who stayed out of the general controversy until now, said he wanted the rule to be "interpreted the same way for both major leagues" If it remains in the book. Open Decathlon Scheduled At Oretech This The Klamath Basin Athletic As sociation, and the OTI track and field club will co-sponsor a de cathlon. The moot is scheduled for Friday and Saturday and the Mile High track will be the scene of this even'.. According to OTI travk coach Larry Bi.rlcson, the decathlon will bo con'iuctod and scored by the official U.S. Olympic Committee rules. The running events will bo the 440-yard dash, the 100-yard dash, high hurdles and the mile. The field events will be tho jave lin, broad jump, high jump, shot put. pole vault and discus. Frick Enters Controversy ".My chief concern is uniform ity," he said. "At the executive council meeting we'll simply nave to determine what is meant by stop. Ftick was referring to that por tion ot rule 8.05 which says a pitcher must come to a full one- second stop in his pitching motion when he is delivering the ball with a runner on base. "I'm in favor of enforcing the rule," Frick said, "but it's non sensical to think any man can try to time a second." Loosely translated, that means the rule may remain in the book but probably will lose all Us "teeth" when stop is revised to pause or some other word that will prevent the umpires from call ing so many balks. Actually, the only time Frick would be called upon to interpret the balk rule would be when teams from the two major leagues met each other, such as the All Star Game or World Series. Otherwise, it's the league pres idents' headache although Giles says he doesn't make the rules, the rules committee docs. Giles Conducts. Survey Bowing to the avalanche of criticism from all sides, Giles said he would have to "consider what steps to take" after he is will be given U the top three ath letes. Challenges have been sent out to several sports fans. The event should he highly competitive since the Owls have several men who could place high in the scoring.
