Newspaper Page TextS.LtSSARt u.or oh High Creeks Forecasted Opening Day With tlie start of fishing sea son Saturday fishermen will find most of the streams high and muddy, and road conditions in some sections not at their best according to district rangers on the Winema National Forest. Hoads to the upper Sycan on the Chiloquin district are good as far as Yamsay Guard Station, but barely passable the remainder of the way. Both the Sprague and Sycan rivers are high. On the Chemult district only a few main roads are suitable for travel. The Silver Lake and Bear Flat roads are open, but forest visitors are cautioned that the Bear Flat road frnm Shevlin Well south to the red cinder surface isl soft, with deep ruts. Many of the roads on the Klam sill district are still closed by snow. In the Lake of the Woods section, the only road open for traffic is the Dead Indian High way. The new highway north of Lake of the Woods is closed. The Wcstside highway is passable from Sewnmile Creek south, hut north of Sevenmile Guard Station all roads are impassable due to deep ruts. It is recommended that travel be limited to surfaced roads un til the spring thaw is over and the roadbeds have settled, Klam ath District Ranger Asa Twnm- bly said. Witzenburger, commanding of ficer of Kingsley Field, pins one of two silver leaves on the tunic of Thomas J. Green, director of personnel, signifying the upgrading of the officer to the rank of lieuten ant colonel. Colonel Green, who came to Kngsley Field in 1 96 1 was upgraded effec tive April 1 5. Alturas Dates Barbershop ALTURAS An evening of good old-fashioned entertainment will be presented at the Alturas Ele mentary School Saturday evening April 27, by the Klamath Falls chapter of the Society for the Pres ervation and Encouragement of I Barbershop Quartet Singing in America. More than 40 performers from Klamath Falls will present a full program of sing along harmony. Featured will be the men's chor us and the women's Sweet Adeline chnrus, along with many quar tets. ( The evening of music will be sponsored by the Alturas PTA and will start at 8 p.m. Donations of $1 for adults and 50 cents for students may be paid at the door, or tickets may be purchased trom members of tha PTA. Pre school children will be admitted free of charge. Aerie Notes Anniversary Aerie No. 2090 will celebrate its 27th anniversary on Sunday, April 21, with a crab feed from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Eagles Hall. A class of 12 candidates will be Initiated and 20 and 30-year lodge ; members will be honored. Twenty nine members will receive 20 year pins, with four members receiving 30 - year pins. Of the original 125 charter members, only two are still active. They are L. E. Priest and John A. Martin. Lack Of High School Funds Seen Slowing Summer Recreation Plan ALTURAS - Expansion of the gram lies in doubt due to the summer city recreation pro loss of funds from the Modoc Un ion High School district. The high school has previously given the city recreation commission $600 a year to help defray the ex penses of the recreation program. This money has not been forth coming for the past two years and indications are that the high school will not help with the recreation program in l'X3. The Alturas elementary district gives $1000 a year for the salary of the recreation director, and the city of Alturas gives $500 to meet expenses. Last year's sum mer program, under the direction of Jay Hammon and assisted by David Starr, proved a huge suc cess with 30 to 40 young people each day participating in the daily programs at the park. Expenses were met with the above men tioned support and a surplus from the city commission. This year there is no surplus and the com missioners state that further ex pansion of the program is almost impossible without the high school support. The commission is making a plea for used recreation equip ment that could be used in the summer program. Anyone wish ing to donate such items as old ping pong sets, badminton sets, croquet sets, and volleyballs may call 2061 and it will be picked up. Jack Greene, pool manager, an nounced that the Alturas city pool will open June 1. Swimming fees will be the same as last year: adults, 50 cents; high school, 35 cents, and grammar school, 25 cents. There will be a fee this year of 25 cents for pre-school users of the wading pool. Greene said that Loretta Broad- hurst, Hazel Hens'cn, and Michele Baldwin have been hired as life guards. A wading pool attend ant and office attendant are yet to be hired. Phyllis Hill, secretary-treasurer of the city commission, reported there is now $1,150 in the fund for the pool heater. This money comes from a $050 donation by the Alturas Lions Club and $500 raised by the Kiwanians last year in family season ticket sales. However, the picket lines were nulled down by the local union while labor leaders awaited the results of a nation-wide vote on the offer. Tlie issue remained in doubt Thursday. The union local at Boe ing's home plant in Seattle Wed nesday accepted the contract by a nearly 2-1 margin. Still to be heard from was an I AM local at Wichita, which re fused' Wednesday to vote on the Boeing offer. "It takes $4000 a year to operate the pool. Nothing is needed in immediate outlay of cash to open the pool. We have all tlie chlorine and basic sup plies on hand." The pool operation depends on the income from the use of the pool by the Alturas Elementary School during the summer, $500 from the city of Alturas for pool maintenance; income from ticket sales, and donations. McCoole testified before a naval court of inquiry investigating the sinking of the nuclear submarine which went down with 129 men aboard April 10. Earlier, Thursday, tlie comman der of the Portsmouth Naval Ship yard, Rear Acim. Charles J. Palmer, was made a "party to the inquiry" by his own request. He explained he made the request because he headed the shipyard where the Thresher was based. It was overhauled there shortly be fore its final voyage. His request came while a naval officer at sea advanced the theorv that a bursting pipe could have caused tlie tragedy. McCoole told the court that on March 23 the Thresher began a "fast cruise" but had to abort it before it was finished because of difficulties in the submarine's air system.
