My mother says 'Get rid of it or else." She can' give me no olh er reason except that she doesn't. , like it. Parents have the power to make kids do I certain things. But do th?y have th right? Is a family a dictatorship where the kids have no liberties? Many famous men have had beards and it didn't do tiiem any harm. Take for example Lin coln, Shaw, Hcmmingway, Mitch Miller and the Smith Brothers Please don't tell me to wait until I am famous. This line is so worn-out I am sick of hearing it. - I admit I like my beard be cause it makes me different. So what's wrong with that? Must we all be Orwellian conformists? Wliat would happen to progress if everybody did only what had been done bcfoie him? Help. Please. Mr. Z Dear Mr. Z.i I've seen a few bearded gentlemrn who look very distinguished. But about 95 per cent of the fur-bearing males look as if they need a bath and some flea powder. What Is so special about the "individualism" of a beard? It doesn't take either brains or tal cot to grow balr. If this Is the best you can do to stand out from the crowd I feel sorry for You. (P.S. How are you fixed for blades, Buddy Boy?) wait until May because he has some bills he wants to get out of the way. My birthday is next month and he knows I want a ring more than anything in the world, but instead he is giving me an expensive set of golf clubs. I'm getting frustrated and madder by the day. Dear Ann Landers: Two years ago I fell in love. Shad was separated from his wife and asked me to marry him when he was legally free. I said yes. Dec. 1 he got his divorce. I wanted a ring for Christmas but was disappointed. When I asked him to set a date lie said, "New Year's Day." Then he changed it to "the end of January." I was all set when he asked me to post pone it until Valentine's Day be cause he didn't feel well. A week before Valentine's Day he said St. Patrick's Day would be great because his mother w'as Irish. . I was just about to phone the Dear Ann: I have a friend who must have a pipe line to another world and a full-time spy-system in this one. If there was a divorce on the moon she'd have the word first. I like to know what is hap pening in town as well as the next person but I resent the way she begins every conversation with, "This is strictly between us. Promise me you won't breathe it to a soul?" Why does she make me promise I won't say anything when she tells half the town? I consider this an attack on my integrity. Please tell me how to cope with the situation without losing her friendship. HONOR BRIGHT Hear Honor: "rromise you won't breathe a word" is a phrase used to heighten Interest and make the person feel he's get ting in on fresh dirt. , If you actually resent it, just say, "No, I don't promise." She will Ignore your reservations and go ahead with her recital, re gardless. It's the best fun she has and she wouldn't be deprived of It for the world! People can change if they have the will to do so. SALEM (L'PIl-The Senate to day passed ltt-'J a bill which would restrict tlie right of farm em ployes to picket. The measure now goes to the House. Tlie bill would ban picketing ex cept by regular farm employes. A regular employe is defined as one who has worked at least 15 days on the farm. Sen. Lynn Ncwbry, R-Ashland said the bill in no way restricted, tlie rights of regular employes to bargain collectively, to strike or to picket. Sen. Don Willncr, D - Portland said the bill put the "entire weight of state government in the scales against those least able to protect themselves the migratory workers. Willner said the bill would put restrictions in a single group which are not placed on any other groups. Sen. Alfred Corhett, D-Portland, said he believed the bill was un constitutional. Sen. Walter Lcth, R-Salem, said the weight of government was against the farmer at present be cause when a picket is at a farm the employment service is direct ed not to send migratory workers there. Packy Receives Birthday Party PORTLAND (UPI) Packy, Portland's much - publicized ele phant, celebrated his first birth day Sunday. Some 8.000 persons visited the Portland Zoo during the weekend to wish the baby pachyderm a happy birthday. Packy was reunited with his mother Belle, for his birthday after being separated from her in February so that he could be weaned. The vole came after almost 90 minutes of debate. The budget is 50,034. It would finance a three-man civil defense stall attached to the governor's office. The governor had asked $195,0001 in general fund monies to induce a 20-man civil defense staff. The measure now goes to the Senate. I Hep. Winton Hunt, Tl Woodburn, almost succeeded in having the budget sent back to the Ways and Means Committee for reconsider ation. He proposed that an alter nate $150,000 CD budget be enact ed to provide an agency that would concentrate on leadership,, communications and reorganiza tion. Several other Republicans join ed Hunt's request. It was defeated 31-28 in an almost-party line vote. Two Democrats, Jake Bennett and Bay Dooley of Portland, voted wilh the Republicans, but two Re publicans who are members of the Ways and Means Committee,! George Flitcraft, Klamath FallsJ and Stafford Hanscll, Hcimiston, voted with the Democrats. Rep. Carrol B. Howe, R-Klam-ath Falls, was excused. Rep. Beulah Hand, D-Milwau- kie, who urged passage of tlie stripped-down budget, said "this budget will produce an adequate civil defense program at reduced cost." The failure of the state CD agency during the Columbus Day storm was again cited as the measure was debated. Voting against the cut - down budget were Reps. Atiyeh, Bazett, Bennett, Boncstecle, Branchfield iCannon, Chappel, Chuinard. Croth- ers. Dellcnback, Detering, Dickin son, Dooley. Elder, Gallagher, Ha- gan, Hoyt, Hunt, Jones, Lang Mailer, Meek, Montgomery, Oud- erkirk, Patkwood, Rogers, and Kobert Smith. There had been speculation be fore the House action that rep resentatives might not approve the budget, and thus wipe out the state's civil defense agencv.
