Jeanine, 5, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Simmons of Bonanza. Her grandfather has lived in Klamath County 74 years. ' Benson Dixon Klamath Resident For 74 Years Benson Dixon of Bonanza has lived in Klamath County almost three quarters of a century, a little more than 74. years to be exact. lie was born on a cold Feb. 17. lWJfi, in Ontario, Canada. Not too much later, his father, Tom Dixon, heard about the op portunities to be had in Southern Oregon, especially Klamath Coun ty. With visions of money in his jeans he brought his family to Linkville via train to Agcr and then by four-horse team to the Tulclake Valley in 1889 to look for a homestead. "It was tough going," said Ben son Dixon in Klamath Falls this week. "There were plenty of coy otes, jack rabbits and rattle snakes." His father and mother, Tom and Janie, sealed on 320 acres of land three miles north of the present Malin. There was no water for irrigation. They raised dry land grain and a few horses. NEWS, Klamath Falls, Ore. nell and Dick Derry own that land today. Tule Lake covered thousands of acres then and roads were "only trails." He went to a one room, schoolhouse north of Malin nnd later worked for the U.S. Bu reau of Reclamation with a horse drawn rig. His father sold the 320 acres for 12,000. Recently 60 acres of the same land sold for $22,000. There were 12 children in the family. Of these, Benson Dixon, Bonanza, Percy Dixon, Klamath Falls, Ira, Roy and Lee Dixon, Tulelake, John F. Dixon of Santa Rosa, Calif., and one sister, Ruth Dixon, San Francisco, are living. Mr. Dixon was accompanied to Klamath Kails by his "body guard," a small granddaughter, Jeanine, just 5, who watches that grandfather does not lose his hat. Mr, Dixon is now semi-retired after farming for many years. He and his wife, Alta, live near Bonanza.
