Spoil Fun On Beach

Being invited on a junket to this
Caribbean resort has given mo an
opportunity to do some work on
a book I've been thinking of
writing.
It is tentatively titled "Don't Let
Vacations Spoil Your Kun" and the
chanter I'm working on now is
about trips to the beach.
The book will be designed to
appeal to the great mass of Amer
icans who do not enjoy vacations
and would rather spend the time
at tlte office except Dial they feel
they should gel away for awhile.
For such persons, vacations at the
beach ara particularly trying. I
have been using much of my time
here studying ways that will make
a beach vacation endurable, if not
enjoyable.

it might be helpful If I listed at
this time some of the results of
my research. Here are seven easy
rules for survival at the beach:
1. On your first day at t h e

squinting at the horizon as though
you are watching something. Then
turn to the bather nearest you
and sny, "Isn't that a shark out
there? This will immediately
clear the area and you will be

swim.
3. Never go near I he beach un
less you take along an air pistol
that can be concealed under i
towel. II is to be used for sur
rcpu'liously shooting down beach
balls that will be landing in your
vicinity, overturning the Thermos
bottle and knocking sand over the
sandwiches.
Should any of (he beach ball
owners catch you in the act of
firing the pistol, explain to them
that anti-aircraft Is internationally
recognized as a defensive weapon
and that you are operating under
a precedent established in Cuba.
If they get nasty tell them to
take it up with Castro.
4. Trade in your sunglasses for a
pair of tinted goggles that com
pletely cover the eyes. They wil
enable you to ogle the girls In
111 bikinis while pretending to be
taking a nap.
5. If you observe the cocktail
hours, do not set the suntnn lotion
near the gin bottle.
If you value your slumber
pay no attention to reports that
the sound of the surf will lull you
to sleep. ,

and Iraqi delegations flew into
Cairo Saturday to work out de
tails of their nations' proposed
federation with President Carnal
Ahdcl Nasser's Egypt.
Nasser called separate meet
ings Saturday with Hie two delega
tions before the formal three
nation talks begin in the secluded
republic palace. Start of the talks
marks a vital moment in the fu
ture of the turbulent Middle East.
The 17-man Syrian delegation,
led by National Revolutionary
Council Chairman C-cn. Louay El
Atlassi and including Premier
Salah Bitnr, flew in enrly Satur
day from Damascus, where dem
onstrations earlier last week
forced a government shuffle.
A (cw hours later the six-man
Iraqi delegation, led by Premier
Ahmad Hassan El Itakr, arrived.
Both delegations were met by
United Arab Republic Premier
Aly Sabry.
The Syrian government difficul
ties cast an immediate shadow
over the talks. In the shuffle the
governing Ba'Athist Party which
stands for Arab unity but has
leuded with Nasser in recent
years was forced to share its
power with non-Ba'Athists.
Success in the talks would
create a giant federation of near.

northeast corner of Africa to the
Asian borders of Turkey and
Iran.

Japan and Communist China.
Ikoua told a political rally In
southern Japan Friday that Red
China's buy-now pay-later policy

trade practices since Tokyo and

His remarks reflected increas

Russia, U.S. Probe Possibilities
Of Returning Man From Moon Trip

The Soviet Union doubtless could
send a man to the moon today.
The sticky part of the problem is
in figuring out a way to get him
back to earth, preferably alive
and healthy.
On this score the U.S. and So
viet man-to-thc-moon projects are
probably in the same boat the
accommodations for lunar-bound
astronauts must be roundtrip. In
the opinion of many experts, this
makes a Russian manned lunar
landing unlikely for at least an
other two years, maybe longer.
Russia may or may nut have
a lower regard for the lives of its
"cosmonauts" that can be left to
the theories of moralists. Certain
ly there is vet no concrete evi
dence of wanton expenditure of
lives in space by the Soviets,
although there are opinions
aplenty.
I Politically Astute
Hut the Russians are politically
quite astute. This, alone, it would
seem, probably rules out the pos
sibility that a Soviet cosmonaut
might be sent on a one-way tripl
to the moon.
Sending a man off into space
with no chance of getting back
alive could he a difficult thing to
explain, even by the masterful So
viet propaganda machine. People
and nations tend to frown upon
such things.

states were treated to a dazzling
display of fireworks Friday night
when the Air Force launched a
satellite employing a Blue Scout
combination as a booster.
A jagged red and white flash
brightened the skies about 7 p.m.
PST. The Air Force, however.
would not pinpoint the lime of
launch and withheld details re
garding the satellite.
The dazzling display, seeming to
stretch (or miles in an oval-shape,
was seen as far away as El Paso,
Tex. Residents in I.os Angeles,
San Bernardino, Arizona and New
Mexico reported seeing the flash.
Police and sheriff's oflices in
many Southern California commu
nities received numerous tele
phone calls inquiring about the
display.
A similar phenomenon was ob
served Thursday night when the
Air Force launched a Titan inter
continental ballistic missile Irom
nearby Vandcnberg AFR.

Exaggerated Interpretations
And there always has been a
tendency toward somewhat exag
gerated interpretations or guess
esof just what the Russians
might be up to. This one, again,
was no exception.
Cape Canaveral has long been
criticized for accepting Russian
space accomplishments with a
shrug of the shoulders while the
rest of the country jumps up and
down. But the Cape is well stocked
with brains that can separate
technical soundness from spec
tacular headlines.
Which is another way of say
ing that Cape Canaveral generally
gets upset about such things when
there is something technically
worth getting upset about. With
Lunik-4. there wasn't.
The Russian moon probe
weighed 3.130 pounds. It w a s a
sizeable piece of machinery. But
from another standpoint, that is
just a shade over the weight of
the bell-shaped Mercury capsule
that the United States has used
in putting its first astronauts into
orbit.
The Mercury program's sardine"
can qualities have been dwelt up
at length. An astronaut would find
it mighty tough going indeed if
he had to spend several days in a
spaceship this size going to the
moon.
No Return Rockets
He could make it to the moon
in a spaceship as big or as small
as Lunik-4 or one even smaller.

ing to go light on food, water and
breathing. But there just would
not be enough room to cart along
rockets for a return trip.

convict wanted in the shooting of
Berkeley policeman, told how
he whs captured in a Mexican re
sort village by four Mexican po
licemen who know only one word
of English.

Berkeley Friday to face a charge
of attempted murder, said he was
arrested last week at Puerto Val-
larta by four officers armed with

He said while he was on the
shooting of patrolman Douglas
Mackintosh in the aftermath of a
supermarket holdup on Feb. 12.
He said he intends to plead guilty.
He said he never knew until Sat
urday that Mackintosh was still
alive.
Mackintosh is recovering slowly
in Hcrrick Memorial Hospital. He
has undergone several operations
to repair damage to nerve and
blood vessels in the shoulders.
