Help Sought For Harvest People in Klamath County who are seeking jobs and housing in strawberry and bean harvests in the Willamette Valley this sum mer may receive advance help from a representative of the Hills boro Oregon State Employment Service Office, according to the lo cal state employment office, The representative will be at the Klamath Falls employment nf I ice. 242 Main Street, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday, April 10, to recruit family groups for straw lierry picking and for later work in the Willamette Valley bean liar- vest this coming summer. The employment service rec ommends this pre-season job-ar rangement program since it helps those wanting these jobs to go directly to work in the valley when tlie wason arrives. The local of fice will be in contact with the Hillsboro office as the season ap proaches and will advise picker groups of the exact date they are to report. Workers can then be directed to jobs and to inspected, ap proved, free housing when re quired. One adult must accom pany each group of persons go ing to these jobs. People who desire work in tlicse harvests may obtain steadier! work and save time and money by making advance arrangements while the recruiter is here. Tlie strawberry harvest usually begins early in June and continues about a month, while the bean harvest follows about July 20 and contin ues for six to eight weeks. Tax Plans Considered SALEM (UPP-Thc House Tax Committee decided Thursday night against taxing incomes from the first dollar. Tlie committee indicated it will set a floor in the state income tax bill it is drafting. The committee is considering a bill with a combined tax system: The graduated tax, plus a small flat tax to pick up low bracket earners. House Speaker Clarence Barton suggested exempting the first $1,000 of income from the flat lax The committee did not make any final decision on where the floor w ill be set. It did, however, decide against an alternate plan for a filing fee instead of a flat tax. Shasta Businessman Succumbs To Heart Ails MOUNT SHASTA - Wayne, George Meroux. 50. well - known businessman, died Tuesday, April in Mount Shasta. Death was caused by a heart attack. Mr. Meroux, an assistant bank cashier and income tax adviser, came to Mount Shasta in 1943. He was a past president of the Southern Siskiyou County Men's Bowling Association and was an active promoter of school athlet ics. Born in Loyalton. Sierra Coun ty, Mr. Meroux resided for many years in Berkeley where he mar- lied Theresa Moisan, in 1930. He was president of the Mariners Club there. Survivors include his wife, The resa Meroux, Mount Shasta; a daughter, Mrs. Judith Pairlee, Or land, Calif.; and one grandson.
