Manager Alvin Dark of the San
Francisco Giants warns that his
pitchers may take matters into
their own hands if the umpires
do not crack down on bean-ball
throwing.
It was like a New Guinea jungle
at Modesto Thursday where head
hunting seemed to be the style
of the day. Cleveland dumped San
rrancisco U-7 as Dark got tossed
out for protesting the bean-balling
The Indians and Giants have

their California series and the
fondness for high, inside pitching
actually started last Saturday
night at San Diego as brothers
Gaylord Perry of the Giants and
Jim Perry for the Indians had
batters sprawling all night
The warfare broke out again
Thursday when big rookie Floyd
Weaver sat Willie Mays down
with a whistler. It was about the
tenth time Mays has been
dropped this spring.
Next time Weaver came up. he
naa to duck two Jack Sanford de
liveries and then took a third on
the elbow.
American League umpire John
Rice walked to the mound and
warned Sanford a move that
would have cost Sanford $50 auto
matically during the regular sea
son.
That brought Dark out to ask
why Weaver had not been simi
larly warned. His protest resulted
in the thumb.
Long after Dark had left, San
ford had to duck a head-searcher!
thrown by Sonny Siebert, which
found Cleveland pilot Birdv Teb
bets drawing a warning.
Weaver, stretched out in the
Cleveland clubhouse with an el
bow encased in ice, said after the
game, "I wasn't throwing at
Mays. The pitch got away andi
sailed. And I don't think Sanford
was throwing at me."
Dark was in a rage in the Giant
clubhouse.
There is only one way to stop
uns. and we ve got to do it be
cause the umpires won't. Every

"The thing is I don't want any

has come out of nowhere, appar
ently is now the Giants number
one short relief man.
San Francisco collected seven
hits as Willie McCovey and Felipe
Alou w hacked homers.
More good news for the Giants
occurred when Matty Alou and
Billy Hoeft returned to limited
action.
Hoeft still can't got his arm
above his shoulder, bul he said
it feels "100 per cent improved."
Alou, hobbled by a knee sprain,
took a long turn at the batting
cage.
