Donna, the 15-year-old Olympic
star, climaxed the second night
of competition by nipping defend
ing champion Sharon Finneran in
' -a thrilling 400-yard Individual
medley duel.
The winning time of 4:47.3 shat
tered the record of 4:52.9 set by
Sharon last year. Miss Finneran
also broke her own record al
though she finished one-tenth sec
ond behind in the gruelling race
Miss Stickles captured Uie 100
yard freestyle in 5.3, equalling
the new meet record set in a pre
liminary heat by Kathy Ellis of
Indianapolis. The latter finished
second in the finals followed by
Miss De Varona.
Defending champion Itohin Jolui
son of the Northern Virginia Aqua
tic Club was fourth.
Miss Whipple came within one
tenth second of the American rec
ord as she won the 250-yard
breaslstroke in 3:14.7. Alice Dris

The Santa Clara team, which

The Seattle Totems and Van
couver Canucks, neck and neck
in the Western Hockey League
with three days to go, resume
their bid for the Northern Divi
sion championship tonight.
Both teams have 70 points as
they head for the wire. The To
tems play host to Calgary tonight
while Vancouver entertains Port
land.
The race w ill probably go down
to the final day, when Vancouver
crosses the border to meet Seat
tle Sunday.
The only WHL action Thursday
night saw the San Francisco Seals
bang Spokane 7-3 in a game that
meant nothing as far as the final
standings are concerned. The
Seals have clinched second in the
Southern Division and Spokane
has no rival for fourth.
San Francisco's Lcn Halcv
scored the 3Wlh and 400th points
of his league career as the Seals
ripped off to a 6-0 lead in the
first two periods. Danny Bclislc
also hit the Spokane net twice.
The Seals are at Los Angeles
tonight to round out a throe-
game schedule including the Cal
gary-Seattle and Vancouver-Port
land tilts.

manager in scrappy Bobby Bra
Kan and new owners in a Croup
of Wisconsin industrialists, but
little in the way of new ball play
crs.
Yet Rragan. never one to de
spair although he lost his two for
mer major league managing jobs
in front office rcorganiiations, and
the new president, Johnny Mc
Hale, are hopeful, if not optimis
tic.
"Wc can fool a lot of people,'
Bragan predicts. And he points to
his potential pitching staff proud
y-
Trouble is he has only one es
tablislied major league outfielder,
"We'll collect that," lie prom
ises. Just how, he doesn't reveal,
although they did obtain Ty Cline
from Cleveland last week to com
plete the deal whereby slugging
first baseman Joe Adcock went to
the Cleveland Indians.
The Braves finished fifth last
year, I5',3 games out.
'I'll promise one thing we'll be
closer this coming year," Bragan
says,
If they arc, a lot of things will
have to jell where there doesn't
seem loo much jelling potential-
like that outfield.
Stars Need Support
But they do have such stars as
Hank Aaron, Eddie Mathews, Del
Crandall, Warren Spahn and Lew
Burdctte. Give them some sup
Hirt and there could be trouble
aplenty.
Aaron, always a good bet to win
the batting triple crown, is the one
outfielder Bragan has. And Bra
gan says he will play exclusively
in right field this year, and not
alternate between right and cen
ter, "and it should help his bat
ting."
Not that his batting needs any
help, but Aaron is not happy play
ing center. He hit .323 last year
with 45 home runs and 128 runs
batted in.
Outfield Lacked Punch

The Los Angeles Angels enter the
I9t3 season sporting practically
the same club that amazed the
American League last year with
a third-place finish after coming
home eighth in their '62 maiden
voyage.
And the Angels were compar
atively idle at the trading post
this winter following a furious
year of bartering which saw Gen
eral Manager Fred llaney swing
more than 40 deals involving 54
players.
However, manager Bill Rigney
declares, "If we didn't deal away
guys like Leon Wagner, Lee
Thomas, Ken McBride and Dan
Osinski then wc were guilty of
standing still.
Those four men figure largely
in plans to prove the rise of "Rig
ney s marvels trom eighth to
third place wasn t a fluke.
"Wc finished a little ahead of
schedule last year," Higncy says
"Now our problem is to do as
well as last season. And we know
that the other clubs really will
be laying for us."
The outfield and pitching are
regarded as the club's strong
points. But ltigney would like to
acquired another left-handed mill
er.
Rack in left field will be Wag
ner, who hit 37 home runs last
vear and drove in 107 base run
ners while hitting a potent 2ii8.

respectively, with only 20 home
runs and 77 runs batted in be

Don Dollard, who hit only .2-'!0,
from Cleveland might help and
then there is the veteran Gus Bell
coming to the end of a fine ca
reer. There doesn't appear to be
much in the way of rookie help
so those six men will have to do
the job. The betting is they can't
do it.
.Mathews, of course, is a fixture
at third. Although he had an off
year in l'Jfi2 he still rapped out
29 home runs and knocked 90
across the plate. It will be Frank
Boiling at second and probably the
aging Jioy McMillan at short.
With Adcock gone, first is a
question mark. Although when the
Braves let Big Joe go they thought
Tommie Aaron, younger brother
of hank, could fill the job. But
Tommie hit only .231 last season
so Norm Larker, obtained from
Houston, and Lcn Gabrielson, who
came up from Toronto as an out
fielder, are being given a shot al
the job.
Crandall Behind Plate
Crandall, although 33, figures to
be the first string catcher with
two Bobs, Uccker and Taylor, in
cserve.
Now as to that pitching Bragan
is so optimistic about.
Spahn, now 41, won 18 last year,
the first season in the last seven
he did not garner 20 victories or
more. Burdette, 36, won 10 games
after being used sparingly during
the first half of the season.
Holdovers Bob Shaw (15-91, Bob
Hcndley (11-13) and Tony Clonin
gcr (8-3) also figure in the start
ing rotation.
The Braves hoped they have
solved their bullpen problem with
Frank Funk, acquired from the
Cleveland Indians where he had a
21 record in 1962.
Bragan also has Claude Ray
mond (5-5) Denny LeMastcr (3-4),
Hon Piche (3-2), and Cecil Butler
(201.
Then it comes down to kids, who
may need more seasoning.
Bui pitching, with Hank Aaron,
Mathews and Crandall, figure to
be the strong points of the Braves.
Unless Bragan can solve his out
field problems, however, the out
look is not too promising.

Kelix Torres, a right-handed long
ball hitler, or Tom Sapi iano,
Higuey has solid utility help in
Joe Koppe, who can play second,
short or third.
Behind the plate is Bob Kodgers.

portion of Avalon Street, heretofore filed
by the City Engineer, be and the same

That the Common Council of the City
of Klamalh Falls, Oregon, hereby de
clared its intention to Improve said por
tion of Avalon Street in accordance with
the plans, specifications and estimates
as follows:
The project shall consist of placing
2,686.27 lineal feet of concrete curb and.
gutter, paving to a width of 60 feet
with either 6 inches of Portland Cement
concrete or v Inches of crushed rock
base with 3 inches of Type B Asphaltic
concrete. The compacted fill shall
sloped from the back side of the curb
downward to the existing ground at
3 to 1 slope. It is the Intent of this
project to salvage all high type asphalt
from Pershing Way to Shasta Way. 'No
sewer facilities are to be considered. No
new sidewalks are Included in this project.
The estimated cost of all classes of
improvement embracing all work and
materials for the complete improvement
