He said that amounted to an extra outlay of M B million last year. W. Boyd Owen, vice president for personnel of the Owens-Illinois Glass Co., appeared in opposition to legislation that would require employers in interstate commerce to equalize pay rates of men and women doing work of equal char acter and skill. Owen said if Congress did pass an equal pay bill, it should take into account higher employment costs for women. "Our employ ment costs are substantially high, er in employing females than in employing males." Owen said in his prepared testimony. "Among the factors to which such in creased costs are attributable are) greater absenteeism, great er labor turnover, higher cost of lunch and rest periods, higher cost of health and welfare bene- 1 its. higher cost of special facili ties." Owen said costs to provide and maintain lounge, washroom and toilet facilities "... including the costs of extra matron service and of providing special supplies" came to $159,525 a year. Nonappropriated fund monies spent during February were $3,- 779; service clubs monies spent for payrolls were $4,520; and service clubs monies spent local ly for supplies totalled $12,006. Miscellaneous funds expended for transportation, radio communica tions, subsistence and petty cash items totalled $52,900. Local vendors desiring to be placed on the base Procurement Office bidder's mailing list may do so by calling TU 2-4411, c.t. 319, from 7:30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m Monday through Friday. During the remaining 10 months of calendar year 1063, il is esli mated that Kingsley will contri bote approximately $6 million in Klamath County for services and supplies. In the original form of Stayman, responder showed a spade, heart or diamond bust by bidding two of his suit to an opening no-trump while jumps to three were always forcing bids. He would show a club bust by first responding with two clubs and then rebidding to three clubs. The first change was to use two clubs followed by three clubs as a bad hand. Then it appeared good policy to use the three-dia mond jump as a bad hand also. South certainly doesn't want to let his partner play one no-trump and if he merely bids two dia monds West won't be shut out Even a three-diamond bid might not shut out West, but this one did. South played three diamonds and made it since he had to lose only one trick in each suit. East and West can make three hearts so this three diamond bid worked well for South. When do you use a bust two- diamond response instead of three diamonds? When you don't feel like risking a three diamond bid Thus, when I play straight Stayman my immediate responses of two diamonds, hearts and spades and three clubs and dia monds are all bad hands.
