UPI Manager Mickey Vernon frank ly admits the lowly Washington Senators are going to continue hurting until their kids blossom. And he knows that will not be in 1903. Vernon has only one optimistic observation (or the coming sea son. "One thing (or sure, we can't fall any lower," he explains. There's no way to go but up." Last year the Senators won only fio games while losing 101, finishing 35'j games behind the Yankees. , . "We've tried to help the team with trades but the other clubs only offer second string players for our first line ones, and wc have more than enough of that caliber of players now," Vernon explained. The 1963 club is a rag-tag out fit as presently constituted and there's a wild open scramble (or most of the jobs. Pitching Strongest Point Pitching could be the club's strongest department for it is the Senator hurlcrs the other clubs talk about when deals are pro posed. Especially sought after are Dave Stcnhouscj 11-12 and Claude Osteon, 8-13. ' - For his other starters Vernon will choose from Don Rudolph, 8-10: Tom Cheney. 7-9; Bcnnie Daniels, 7-16; Ed Boubaugh, 0-2; Joe MoClain, 0-4; or rookie Jim Duckworth, a 10-game winner at Rocky Mount last season. There isn't too much in the way o( bullpen prospects so some of those possible starters may have to be used in relief. Steve Hamilton, 3-8 lust season and Art Quick, the former Oriole who was 2-2 with Baltimore and 7-6 with Rochester in 19R2, are the leading relief candidates. The infield is really a hodge podge affair. Tom Brown, Uni versity of Maryland bonus boy, has looked good at first base in the absence of Rngclio Alvarez, who hit .318 at San Diego last season. Alvarez has been delayed getting out of Cuba. Don Lcpport, obtained from Pittsburgh, could be the No. 1 catcher, winning the job over Ken Retzer, last year's regular receiver. Ix;ppcrt hit only .266 in the limited action he saw with the Pirates while Retzer batted .285. The third catcher will be Bob Schmidt, who backed up Retzer last season and hit .242.
