HKRALD AND XFWS. Klamath FalU, Orr. Coal Miners Reject Plea By Premier PARIS i CPU-France's 200.000 striking coal miners Saturday re jected Premier Gorges Pompi- dou's return-tn-work appeal and said they would defy one from President Charles De Gaulle "if he says the same as Pompidou "We will slay out as long as necessary," a spokesman for the powerful French General Federa tion of Workers (CGTl said. "If the government tries individual requisitioning of miners it will have no chance of success." De Gaulle immediately called in Pompidou for discussions. Pompidou on radio and telcvi sion Friday night appealed to the miner to face up to their "moral responsibilities." He asked them to go back to work and discuss wage problems with the govern ment next September and with out the U per cent pay raise they seek. The government has offered a 5.7 per cent pay raise. A spokesman for the CGT. which represents 70 per cent of the strikers, said Saturday the1 reaction of the miners to the speech was a reinforcement of their determination to strike. "For an unlimited period?" he was asked. "Indefinitely," was the reply Reports from almost all of the strikebound pits indicated that the miners were solidly behind the lour unions representing them in Uie dispute. Miners in the Lorrain area met and passed a resolution express ing their determination to stay out "until we get justice." BEN MURPHY Irish Dance Scheduled At Merrill MERRILL Sure and 'tis time for the Irish to gather and to dance and sing and make merry at the Irish dance on the night after the Ides of March which will be Saturday night of March 16. They will gather in the Merrill Community Hall to dance from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. until the musi cians. Bud Richardson and his Wcslcrnaires are too tired to blow a horn or play a fiddle. This is the 57th annual St. Pat rick's Dance and there will be many of the oldtimers there to talk over those early dances when money was scarce but fun reigned when two or more Irish - men got together and there are none to dispute it. There is only one St. Patrick's Day dance a year, so don't be the one to stay away for missing one is to mourn. The old Irish spirit will he as stmng as in oilier years, espe cially that first year when no one could know how the dancing would turn out nor the people either. But it was a success and so today those who love to dance the Irish jigs, the swing and the square dance still gather. . There w ill be those there, w hose ancestors came from the Wick Inw Mountains, Knockmealdnwn and Galty in the south, or from the plains only 500 feet above sea level, all with the same thought, to dance the night away. And there will be others from the melting pot of America who like to dance too. There will be special entertain ment by Clarence Rasdal and his Midland Square Dancers so don't miss it. Ben T. Murphy, chairman, and his co-chairman, Warren Walker, invite one and all to the St. Pat rick's Day dance at Merrill on the nisht nf Saturday. March Ifi. Red China May Demand Return Of Siberia Land LONDON IUPH Communist China has raised the possibility it may demand the return of huge areas of Siberia, including Vladi vostok, taken by the "unbridled aggression" of the old Russian Czars, British experts said Satur day. The hint was contained in Fri day's edition of the Peking Peo ple's Daily in a cryptic reference to the "unequal treaties imposed on China by imperialist and colonialist powers." "By virtue of these unequal treaties they annexed Chinese territory in the north, south, east and west and held eased territories on the seaboard and in the hinterland of China," the official newspaper said. British experts said the slate ment marked the beginning of a shift of the Sino-Soviet dispute from the purely ideological sphere to the wider and more explosive fields of political and territorial disputes. Vast Stretches The areas taken by Russia in the past include vast stretches north of Vladivostok along the Pacific coast and Russia's indus trial centers of Komsomolsk and Khabarovsk areas as large 'as Alaska. There also are areas bordering on Sinkiang province in West China and the Soviet-Afghanist frontier which are held affected by the past ."unequal" Czarisl treaties. Some Chinese maps were under stood to be showing the borders in those areas as ".undefined" a phrase used by Peking recently in a number of current efforts to modify the borders. The "unde fined" Sino-Indian border led to a border war last fall. Some experts have thought for some time that Red China was Hoffa Invites p n t XI OX If f" O r tlCKBT Lff?6 WirOl ST. LOUIS, Mo. Retarded Children Plan Gains Committee Okay SALEM (LPl'-The House Edu cation Committee Friday ap proved a pilot program for the menially retarded, tabled a pro posed change in the basic school support formula, and created a subcommittee to study a proposed increase in basic school support. The measure also calls for a detailed report on the program to the 19fo legislature. . The tabled bill would have mod ified the method of giving trans portation aid to school districts, and the method of disposing of unneeded funds allocated for ex panding districts. A four - member subcommittee will give further study to a bill w hich would increase basic school support from $120 to $135 per child in 1963-64, and to $150 there after.
