WORK SMARTER NOT HARDER By BERNICE STRAWS Home Management Specialist Homemaking. like everything else, has been invaded by science to your benefit, of course. But the scores of household chemicals! on the cleaning shelf bring many questions to our extension service offices. We often call on OSU chemists to provide the answers.! "Is there danger in mixing quid chlorine bleach and house hold ammonia?" Chemists say no, if handled care fully. By this. Jhey mean to dilute the bleach as it should be washing clothes. They do caution, however, to avoid mixing bleach or other household cleaners as regular practice. Chlorine fumes which might be given off in small amounts, are so irritating to your nose and throat that you'U be heading for fresh air before you have breathed enough to be harm ful. You'll not need to worry if you use reasonable care. Keep chemicals away from children and follow directions on the bottles When is the best time to add bleach to the washer? If you use liquid chlorine bleach, the answer is about three minutes after the clothes have started agitating in Uie detergent suds. Recent research shows that this timing gives the whitest clothes. The reason is this. The detergent contains a brightener which needs few minutes to fix itself to the fabric. The bleach would interfere with this chemical action. When the bleach (diluted, of course! is added later, you get full benefit of the brightener and of the whiten- Dunsmuir. ing power of the bleach. After six or eight hours, put the pan of charcoal in a moderate oven to drive off tne odor and "reactivate" it. (Don't worry, odor will not stay in your oven.) Put charcoal back in the refriger ator again until all odor has dis appeared. Save the charcoal you can use it over and over :ain. Smart Homemakers Tell Is Save time and temper when you vacuum throw rugs with this quick trick. Run the vacuum clean er diagonally over small rugs. This will keep the edges from being drown into the nozzle and the rug will stay flat on the floor. Throw rugs that skid often cause accidents which could lay you up for days or even weeks. If your rugs are laid over smooth flooring, use double-sided masking tape as a temporary but effective measure. Smooth the tape along the underside of the rugs edges, then lay the rug with the tape in contact with the floor. This works beautifully. And don't worry if some adhesive sticks to the floor. It will come off with usual cleaning methods. 'Our refrigerator has a bad odor. No amount of washing with soda water seems to do any good. What can be done?" Here again, chemists came to the rescue. Get activated charcoal at the Jrug store. You won't need much about three ounces is plenty. This is a fine powder which you can spread in a thin layer on a sheet of aluminum foil or a shal low pan on the refrigerator shelf. The charcoal will "soak up" the odor.
