With seven games left to play and a seven-game lead over second-place St. Louis, the Lakers' chances in the Western Division are excellent. But the Lakers didn't bring the crown any closer Monday night as they lost their fifth in a row as Cincinnati top pled them 114-111. Boston, which has won three more games than Los Angeles, is in good shape to finish with the highest NBA percentage. Laker Coach Fred Schaus. who tried his fifth different starting lineup in the last five contests, said, "Our concern is still St. Louis. We haven't won yet." The gray-haired, blue-eved Ok lahoma City professional won the richest tournament of his lifetime Monday by out scrapping Bob Ros- burg in the final four holes of live $40,000 Greater New Orleans Open invitational golf tournament. The victory brought him a check of $6,400. Wininger won a total of $495 in six previous tour naments this vcar. Monday he came from behind twice to become live first player in history to win the New Or leans tournament tv.o stimIii years. Both years he did it by beating Rosburg when the pres sure was on. Wininger went into the final round of the tournament two strokes behind the Portland. Ore., veteran, but the battle had just started. The defending champ knotted the court in the first (our holes. Then Rosburg rallied for a three-stroke lead at the end of nine. Wininger tied the score at the 12th hole, but Rosburg fought back with a tremendous tec shot on tlie 13th hole, giving him a birdie and another one-stroke lead. The end began on the 15th hoi: when Wininger gambled alter his tee shot struck a tree. He picked up his two-iron, ignored the ad vice of his caddy, and hooked his way through the trees for 210 yards and a commanding position 25 feet from the cup. Rosburg meantime was in trou ble in a bunker. He then chipped into a trap. His bad trap shot lelt him 30 feet from the cup and he bogied. Wininger, still shooting for broke, tried for an eagle but missed by two inches. Coach Bud Poile of the San Francisco Seals was fined $200 by league president Al Leader for his "actions toward officials" in the game against Los Angeles last Friday. Camille Bcdard of the Seals al so was docked $50 for his behavior in the same game. Leader said both men must pay their fines by March 11. Latest league statistics showed San Francisco's Nick Mickoski still in front with 79 points. Seat tle's Guyle Fielder was second with 75 points and his 62 assists gave him the lead in that depart ment. Buddy Boone of Vancouver has scored 37 goals in 57 games to top that department. Portland's Don Head continues to be the league's top goalie with a 2 65 average. Leader announced that WHL lirectors would meet in Sealtle Thursday to discuss playoffs and next season's schedule. LOUIS (UPI) Missouri Valley Conference Coach John Bcnington fretted today over blast from Marquette Coach Ed Mickey that the lanky St. Louis University - Billiken coach had steered a top Illinois basketball prospect away from the Wiscon sin school. "I resent and declare untrue Mr. llickey's charge," said Bcn ington, whose university ended relations with Marquette for next season. The athlete involved In the re cruitment charge was identified by Hickey as Sam Ulrich, a 13- poinl average shooter on tlie Bil liken frosh team. Ulrich had scouted both Mar quette and St. Louis universities before enrolling here. The Benington-Hickey (cud ap parently broke over a news story in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch which said the Billikens "had dropped" Marquette from the basketball schedule for Loyola of Chicago. The simmering Hickey tele phoned the sports department of the newspaper here to "set the record straight." "I'm not trying to build up a big feud, Hickey said. Minor injuries are quite com mon as tlie veterans and rookies alike tone up arm and leg mus cles for the opening of the sea son, which is only five weeks away. However, the casualties this spring are reaching an alarming licight. Virtually all 20 ma.ior league teams have a "walking wounded" list. No less than eight players, In cluding Milt Pappas, the Balti more Orioles' hard-luck pitcher, and catcher Chris Cannizzaro of the New York Mots, wound up in tlie infirmary Monday. Injures Right Knee Pappas injured his right knee wlule warming up at tlie Orioles camp in Miami. X-rays showed he had an inflammation of tlie knee lining, which will sideline him for a lew days. A year ago Pappas missed the start of the season when lie underwent an emergency apcndectomy. He pre viously had been hampered uy an inflamed right elbow.
