Outstanding Modoc Seniors Receive Awards From Bank ALTURAS Recipients o! the Bank of America awards for out standing senior students at Mo doc Union High School Mere an nounced iast week by Use prin cipal, Marks Smith. Winners of these awards are chosen upon laeulty recommen dation in the fields of liberal arts, fine arts, vocation arts, and mathematics and science. Supe rior scholarship, participate in school and community activities. and general citizenship are ail taken into consideration in selec tion of the honored students. Bonnie Hickerson received the trophy for her field of liberal arts, and John Quinn received the award in the general fields of science and mathematics. In the commercial field. Carolyn Went- zell was awarded the vocational arts award. The Daughters of the American: Revolution award for good citizen-i ship was awarded to Marilyn Da vidson. The American Legion wil again ponsor a Modoc High School rep resentative to Boys' State. In June, representatives from high schools all over California will meet in Sacramento for a practi cal demonstration of good gov ernment, w ith the boys themselves serving as governor and other slate ouicers. David Starr was selected for tills honor with Bob Hetherwick as alternate. The A! turas Rotary Club will finance the trip to Sacramento. The American Legion Auxiliary Girls State held in June will have Betty Jean Clark as tlie Modoc Union High School rep-j resentative and Mildred Larimore; as her alternate. This year's local w inner of the annua! Lions Club public speaking contest is Betty Jean Clark. Bet ty w ill go on to speak in district and regional speaking contests for the Lions Club as the rep resentative of AJturas. Rail Labor Act Revision Seen WASHINGTON iUPli Sen Wayne Morse. D-Ore., has indi-i caled Congress may have to re-; vise the Railway Labor Act to; deal with the problem of losses due to automation. Morse, an authority on labor- management relations, made the statement during questioning of Howard G. Gamser of New York by tlie Senate Labor Commit tee. The committee Friday ap proved Gamser's appointment to; the National Mediation which mediates labor disputes in volving railroads and airlines. The senator said tne "problem of automation' is bound io in crease and some method wil! have to be found for settling disputes brought about by job losses, with out resorting to compulsory ar bitration.
