Carter won the 1X2 classic but has been off to a slow start this year. He has won $3,547 in 1963 compared with the more than $40,- 000 he took home in 1962. Carter, 36, and the other vet erans on the tour have been hav ing their troubles with the young or set. Last week in Dallas the St. Louis bowler lost in the quar ter-finals of the All-American Clas sic to 25-year-old Bill Johnson of Kansas City. It was only Johnson's fifth tournament as a pro and he went on to beat Don Ellis of Houston and Pat Patterson of St. Louis to take the $5,000 first prize money. The win moved Johnson to num ber six in the lop 10 on the tour ncy this year. Andy Marzich, 26, or Long Beach, Calif., leads the pack with $10,995 won after finishing first at Denver and Louisville. In his sophomore year on the tour, Mar zich Is the only bowler to win twe tournaments. There will be 8fi PBA members in the Houston tournament plus another 10 local non-members for a total of 96. The list includes such big name stars as Ed Lubanski of Detroit, Jim St. John of Chicago, and Al Savas, Dick Weber, Billy Welu and Harry Smith, all of S' Louis. Buker was TKOed in the second when the fight was halted. He had been decked once already and barely beat the 10 count. Casey Has One Aim -To Keep Mets From Becoming 'Fraud' ST. PETERSBURG, Kla. (UP1 Casey Stengel has only one aim this year and that is to keep the New York Mets from becoming a fraud. "And Hint's just what we'll be if we don't do better than last year," claims Stengel, who will be 73 in July. Old Case, fltor a long and brilliant stint as manager of the Yankees, took over the newly formed Mets at their inception last year and found the going "awfully rough." They won only 40 games while losing 120, finishing en'i games behind the pennant winning Giants. "I can't see how things can be tougher," Stengel sighed. "On the other hand, I'm not kidding my self. We're a long way from be ing a representative major league team." He isn't giving up hope, how ever. Dozen Major I.raguerts "Last year at this time we did not know how many, if any, ma jor league players we had on our roster," he pointed out. "At least we're tincad of the game in thai respect this year for we know e have a dozen players who be long." He didn't name tlicm all but as he rambled on for a few thou sand words he said that olher clubs were bidding lor pitchers Al JacktMiu, Jay Hook and Koaer Craig, outfielder Frank Thomas and Jim Hickman and InfieKler Charlie Neal. "The clubs that let those play ers go in the player draft to slock our new club now w ant 'em back." Stengel explained. "So It turns out they made mistakes when they let them go. But they didn't make enough so far as we are con cerned for most of the olhers we got didn't turn out so good." Stengel slill is hopeful of mak ing some deals. He and President Cieorge Weiss ate on the phone almnt every day talking with oilier clubs. Want Duke Snider "1 don't suppose we'll get any where until we near the end of spring training when the other learns will have a betler line on what they need," Weiss said, "Hut we'll keep trying " The Mets still would like tn get veteran Duke Snider from the Dodgers because Ihey are short of Ictl-handed hitting outfieldrs. But the Dodgers want Craig in exchange and the Mels want to pay cash. "We can't afford to trade one of our established players unless we can gel Iwo players in re turn who cm play for us every day," explained Weiss. Counts, Baker Named Honorable Mentions NEW YORK (UPD Art Hey man of Duke, the No. 1 pro pros pect in college basketball, and Ron Bonham and Tom Thackcr, standouts on lop ranked Cincin nati, are the leading choices on the 1963 United Press International All-America team announced to day. His name thus appeared on 8S.2 per cent of the ballots cast. Scoring Average Low Bonham and Thacker were next in popularity, followed by Hark ness and Bradds, in that order The scoring average of 22.2 points per-man per-game for this year's All-America team is com parativcly low (last season's, for example, averaged more than 27 points per man). However, this year's honor five shows excellent balance, with 6-foot-8 Bradds the high scoring pivot man and rebounder; Hey man and Bonham, each 6-foot-5. the strong, aggressive forecourt men, and Thacker and Harkness each 6-foot-2, the outside sharp shooters and ballhawks The consensus of the nation's college basketball experts thus se lectcd a team dominated by four players from Midwestern schools Heyman, Thackcr and Harkness are seniors, while Bonham and Bradds are juniors. Represent Top Teams The All-Americans also come from among the six highest rank ing college, teams. Cincinnati Duke and Loyola are rated 1-2-3 by the UPI Board of Coaches and Ohio State is sixth. Barry Kramer of New York University heads the second team which includes Nate Thurmond of Bowling Green, Rod Thorn of West Virginia, Bill Bradley of Princeton and Cotton Nash ot Kentucky. They received votes in that order. A third team is made up of: Walt Hazzard. UCLA; Dave Stall- worth, Wichita; Nick Werkman of Seton Hall, the major college scor ing leader; Eddie Miles. The Buckaroos, following a 5-4 loss to Calgary Wednesday night, now have only an exposed one- point lead over the San Francisco Seals in the Western Hockey League Southern Division. And the Sals arc in action to night, against Los Angeles on the Blades' Ice, while the Buckaroos are not scheduled.
