Water Rate Hike Suspended SALEM UP1 An increase in water rates proposed hy the Orocon Water Corp., tor its Oak land service area was suspended by the public utility commissioner. Commissioner .lone! C. Hill said OWC is asking ior an aver ago rate increase of approximate ly M per cent. Or. Knelt Hummel, professor of education at Portland Slate College, told the annual meeting of the American Educational ile search Association in Chicago this week that studies of 675 high schools in the Northwest revealed that 33 per cent of the accredited schools have enrollments of less than 200 students. "The evidence indicates that academic recognition of second ary schools in the Pacific North west cannot be equated with school enrollment," he said. In Oregon there arc 219 scennd irv schools and IBS are accredited by the Northwest Association of Secondary and Higher .Schools, he said. A total nf B8 accredited Oregon secondary schools have enrollments of 3IH) students less and have a faculty of from five to 17. Dr. Hummel poinled out that the findings ran contrary to popu lar thinking. A large number of small schools are able to secure academic standardization and accreditation. f-.' ...
