In that case South would be able lo trump a losing diamond with dummy's re maining trump and still go down one. The way the cards lay South would make his contract. April 4-5. at the Oregon Techni cal Institute Little Theatre, ac cording to Mrs. W. D. Miller, di rector of the musical. In addition to the lead roles, four oilier principal parls have been cast and performers for nu merous other roles w ill be named later. The setting of the musical is a lumber camp at Port Ludlow, Wash., in the late 1800s. when Indians and half-breeds were subjects of scorn in the brawling Western logging camps. The musical relates the reac tions of Eliza to the rustic en vironment of the Northwest and the even more rustic demeanor of the loggers which is in extreme contrast to the community and people of her native Philadelphia. Eliza, to be portrayed by Mrs. Gene Favell, finds that despite the continual absence of her hus band and the presence of his part ner, that love may lie a quiet thing even in a howling wilder ness. Unlike the singing role she as sumes. Mrs. Favell's talents are more culinary than social. She not only cooks, but is an accom plished homcmaker rearing six children from .1 to 12 years of age. Mrs. Favell's acting experi ence has lieen in college pro grams, but she has performed fre quently as a singer for numerous local organizations. Eliza's husband, the brawny lumberjack Thomas Barrett, is being played by Jerry Strickland, a Kingsley Field airman who is a former instrumental soloist and singing soloist for the 23th Air Division. In addition to having demonstrated the ability to per form the role. Strickland has the physical attributes of a lumber jack. He was awarded a football scholarship lo Arlington Slate Col lege, where he changed his ma jor from music to prc-law. LeBeau, the youngster who has the role of the unusual Indian boy, was persuaded to try for the part by Lefty Wild Eagle, tlie operator of an Indian muse um near Fort Klamath. Jules, for merly of Chiloquin. has resided in Klamath Falls for the past three years and has been a par ticipant in scliool programs. Familiar to local little theatre goers is Hawlev, as Bullwhacker Joe. who has appeared locally in such productions as "Lo and Be hold" and "Two Blind Mice." He was also a performer in two musi cals in Aberdeen. Wash. As the "small town timlier wolf" Bullwhacker Joe. Hawley solos and ducts w ith San Francis co Annie. The latter role is taken by sultry-voiced Mrs. Gilbert, a past performer in the Spokane Civic Theatre and the Snohomish County Lillle Theatre but who is known locally as the director of the Klamalh Civic Theatre's play, "The Tender Trap." School Pay Given Vets Stale educational benefits were paid to 775 World War II and Korean War veterans last year in the amount of $Hi2,312, Frank lin G. Reynolds, education of fi cer for the Department of Vet erans Affairs, reported. The av erage benefit was nearly $210. Since the state program of fi nancial aid to veterans in schools and colleges started in 1IH5, bene- lits have gone In 13.0115 students in the amount of $3,576,183. Rey nolds said. The over-all average payment lo each veteran was $273.
