Jerry hates' to be shut out of (he bidding and when West's four heart bid came around to him Jerry tried four spades. East doubled. It didn't look like a mistake at the time and things looked even better to East after his partner opened the five of dia monds and ruffed the diamond return. But Jerry was optimistic. He was pretty sure that West had opened four hearts with 8-3-1-1 distribution. Assuming that West held the king of clubs as part of his bid Jerry set out to teach East when not to double. West could have heaten the hand with a club shift, hut he played are and another heart, whereupon the defense was through. Jerry ruffed in dummy and led a spade. He planned to play the eight, if East played the seven, but East played the nine. Jerry won with the queen and led the jack of clubs. West ducked and Jerry played dummy's queen. He led another spade and won East's ten with the king. He led a club to the ace. ruffed a club, entered dummy with the jack of dia monds: led another club and showed East his hand. Enrollment Hikes 38 Fall term enrollment in Oregon community colleges and vocational-technical schools has increased ) 38 per cent over the 1!W1 fall term enrollment. A total of 9.H42 students are reported by the nine institutions according to Dr. Leon P. Minear. superintendent of pub lic instruction. This compared with 7.137 en rolled in the fall of 1961. Treasure Valley Community College at On tario. Ihe only new institution to come under the program this year, reports an enrollment of 248. Programs designed for full-time students comprise Ihe major por tion of the enrollment this fall, with 945 in college transfer stu dents and 2.063 in vocational-technical curriculum. Evening voca tional and general education class es make up the balance of 6,1132 enrollments. Dr. Minear also indicated that enrollments for the 1961-62 school year had come within four per ce"1 of earlier projections made bv '.'..e Stat Department of Edu cation in the in-Year Joint Pro jection with the State Department of Higher Education.
