O o o o o O u 0 'Lemon Squash, Hedted Canines Briton Terms Baseball Maris Nullified By Referee Match' Silly, What? :; By HARRY FERGUSON ' LONDON (UPI) - Maj. Alan Eroderick is back from a visit of several months in the United States and has resumed his place at his favorite corner table in the King and Eight Bells. The major is a solicitor (a lawyer who doesn't appear in court i, an ardent sports man and a fanatic on cricket. "Went to a baseball match in New York, y'know," said the ma jor when the pub owner had . brought him a pint of bitter. "No ; offense intended, old chap, but it's ; a silly business, what? Not logical .like cricket. Was told to keep my eye on a chap named Maris. Stout fellow, hits 'em for six and all that. "Sat next lo an extraordinary American. Said he was a Maris partisan, but first time Maris comes up to the wicket this chap started exclaiming Los it, Roger, lose it.' Guess he wanted the bowl er to defeat Maris, but still he was a Maris partisan. Split per sonality. Referee Nullifies Maris "Maris struck one into a high arc. Realiy, it w as extremely well struck, but the referee nullified Maris. "Chap posted out on the grassy section of the pitch went over and caught the ball in a mitten. That nullifies you, y'know. Next time Maris went to the w icket the bowl er was in smashing form. Maris kept trying to strike the ball, but could not make contact. Referee nullified him. "Extraordinary thing happened two-thirds through the match. Peo ple stood up and stretched their arms. No yawning, just stretched their arms. Chap next to me ex plained it was something like a tea interval. Nobody served tea, but whole idea of interval was silly. All through the match Americans were drinking lemon squash and ginger beer and eating those heat ed canines, vendors would bring them right to your seat y'know. Caught Without Mitten "Maris went up to the wicket for third time. Struck another high arc. Well struck, too, but don't understand why the referee didn't nullify him. Chap in mufti stood up from his seat and caught it. Amazing catch. Chap didn't have any mitten on. Maris moved slow ly around the part of the pitch that is covered with soil. People screaming, y'know. Hysterical. American next to me kept shout ing Maris was going to strike an infant." "You must have misunderstood him, major." "Not at all. Chap kept slwuting Maris was going to beat tlie babe. Shouted it repeatedly. Heard him quite distinctly." "He meant Maris was going to beat Ruth." Ruth An Adult? "Striking a woman just as hein ous as striking a baby, y'know." "Look, major, you must have heard of George Herman Ruth. He was like W. G. Grace in cricket. He hit 60 home runs, or as you say boundaries for six, in one sea son. Maris was trying lo beat the Babe's record for home runs." "Ruth an adult?" "Yes." "Why Babe then?" . "It was his nickname. Every body called him Babe." "Not to his face, I hope. Makes j he played in more games than him out to be a case of arrested ! Ruth and they made a special development, what? Must confess rule . . . . " never followed baseball any more. "Never mind trying to explain. Did Maris beat the Babe?" 0ia cnap," the major interrupted. "Well, yes and no, major. You "Like I said, baseball is silly busi see. Maris hit 61 home runs but ness, eh?" Y ? A win for the Owls Saturday will level them off with a 2-2 mark and a defeat would do the same for the visitors. In that case PSC, OTI and OCE would each claim a share of the number two spot. The Raiders are rated a strong favorite to handle the Moun taineers. From a comparative score standpoint, using Southern Oregon in the comparison, the Techmen get the nod as the favorite here Saturday, but the intense rivalry between the Owls and the Wolves has proven over seasons past that comparisons do not win ball games. The Owls were barely beaten, Jsi BARKS W BITES By WAYNE SCOTT (Continued From 1-B) see them do away with the sus pension type helmet do away with the webbing and make it fit more snugly to the player's head. And also, cut down on the mask . . , this would Increase the player's area of vision. With the protrud ing face mask and the 'suspension' helmet there is always a possi bility of getting up Inside the headgear and this can be dan georus. "In regards the NCAA's plan ... I would like to see a much more extensive study undertaken before they decide. No reference has been made as yet as to the number of head injuries among the 26 deaths reported . . . and I think it is probable some are due to heat prostration, lack of training, conditioning, etc. "Perhaps they can pinpoint the actual cause and then decide." Bob Williams, Klamath Union football coach: "I'm firmly In favor of both the plastic helmet, the type we use here, and the face mask. I'm convinced that if either of the two pieces of equipment are respon sible for injuries I'd have to say It was the mask. However, given my choice I'd want my players to use the masks. There's a lot of protection there for them and after all, the helmet and mask were designed to protect the wearer. lY "I'd like to make it clear, In face of all we have been reading, that the number of fatal injuries this year is certainly not that of the average year. These things just happen, and this year has been a bad one. Last year there were a great deal fewer and I'm sure that next year things will be different again. In my 11 years of coaching I have had only two head injuries on my squads . . . and I've stuck with one maker of helmet through out. The company that makes this gear spends a lot of time, money and research effort to determine the safest, most practical things for our players to use . . . and I'll have to go along with them. They've made improvements over the years . . . and they'll probably come up with some more. We don't use the 'suspen slon' type any more and I'm sat isfied with what we use now but if they modify the helmet again, we'll go with them. "This type of helmet is used by the Air Force, race drivers etc. . . . and it provides the maximum of protection. "I want no part of the old leather helmet . . . they are just as hard ... and they don't give the boy enough protection." 6-0, by the Raiders while the Wolves suffered a humiliating 26-7 loss at the hands of the big Red. Coach Bill McArthur's team is led by power-house ground-gain-j er Bob Pennel, one of the top; rushers in the league. i The Owls have been working! this week to make sure that their . defenses, the best in the league! for the OCC season, contain Fen nel. The Tech answer to the Pennel threat lies in fullback Stan Glass, who was bumped from the j top of the OCC rushing heap when he was limited by a bad hand in-; jury a few weeks back. Joining Glass in the Owl offen sive structure will be halfbacks, Lanny Myers and Harvey Gra- ham, and quarterback Bill Ran some. i No changes in the offensive plans are scheduled for the week end, according to the Owl coach ing staff, and the squad came through their bruising defeat at the hands of the Humboldt Slate Lumberjacks with no injuries. The Owls got away with a nar row 26-20 victory the last time the two schools met, the 1960 contest being played on the Wolves' home grounds. GATOR PROSPECTS JACKSONVILLE, Fla.
