Cal Tjader and his quintet,
presenting the futuristic beats of
"Jazz '(52," Willi appear In con
cert at Oregon Technical Insti
tute starting at 8:30 p.m.
Tjader, who has dubbed his
traveling show "Tjazz by Tja
dcr," Is a product of the San
Francisco Bay's many jazz houses
and, incidentally, of San Jose and
San Francisco State colleges.
He was the fust winner of
the Down Beat New Star Award
in the vibraphone category.
Though the vibraphone is his
chief instrument, Tjader Is also
an accomplished tap dancer. He
first came to national prominence1
as a member of the famous
Dave Brubcck Trio and later
toured with the George Shear
ing Quintet.
The quintet, besides Tjader,

He was the son of "show1
biz" parents and loured with

While In high school, Tjader
took up drams, switching to the
vibes in college. He turned down
an opportunity lo join the Lio
nel Hampton Orchestra in San
Francisco in order to finish hisl
stint with the psychology text-
books while at San Jose Slate
College.

come to give their birthday greet
ings, tire pontiff urged dedication
to truth.
"By working for truth," he said.
"you will also be working for
human fraternity. Because it is
error and the lie that divide men."
Next week, combined celebra
tions will be observed here lo
honor Pope John's birthday and
the anniversary of his election as
the supreme ruler of the Roman
Catholic Church. Highlight of the
observance will be a papa a
capclla in St. Peter's Basilica
next Saturday.
Pope John was born Nov. 2o,
1881, at So! to il Monte, a little
town in northern Italy, whose
names mean "Under the Mount.'
He was elected Pope Oct. 28. 1958
and crowned seven days later, on
Nov. 4.
