It is of cast-iron construction and rated at 13S horsepower. Optional on the Special and Pontiac Tempest and standard on the F-85 is the aluminum, 155-horsepower V-8 of last year. Tempest continues its slant four-cylinder, liquid-cooled unit standard in the Chevy II. It produces a peppy 90 horse power, and the optional six-cylinder unit for this car is rated at 120 horsepower. Both engines are of similar design, to the extent that many of the reciprocating parts are interchange able. Corvair is sticking with its familiar rear-mounted, air cooled power plant. The Ford in-between cars (Fairlane and Meteor) offer the option of a new 221-cubic-inch V-8 for the performance minded. Rambler continues to offer its aluminum six in some models, as do Lancer and Valiant. This last engine is little known to the public, but was tested extensively last year in fleets. The manufacturers claim exceptional performance with little sacrifice of economy. Engine design in larger cars has remained relatively static although a family of power plants have been developed over the years for each make ranging from detuned, regular gas units to hot rods. DRIVE TRAIN! Pontiac Tempest, with its transaxle, and Corvair, with both engine and transmission in the rear, con tinue to be the only unorthodox designs. The three newcom ers, the Chevy II and Ford's Fairlane and Meteor, have a conventional layout with a front-mounted engine and trans- Dodge Lancer mission driving the rear wheels. Next spring, though, the Cardinal will re-introduce front-wheel drive on the Ameri can scene for the first time since the late, lamented 1937 Cord. Rambler has come up with what it calls an "E-stick" transmission on its American series. The driver shifts through the standard pattern, but the clutch action is en tirely automatic. The unit is tagged to-sell for about $60. RUNNINQ GEAR: Big news here is the large number of cars switching to chassis bearings that need little if any greasing. Only Chevrolet, Falcon, Comet, F-85, Studebaker, Buick, and some Ramblers still require a monthly grease job. Oldsmobile and Cadillac never need greasing in normal usage, and the rest specify a 30,000-35,000-mile interval. Other trends in this service-free direction include almost universal use of self-adjusting brakes (the kind that adjust themselves automatically when you back up), extended war ranties, and Chevrolet's, Ford's, and Rambler's-two-year coolants. Another item new to smaller 1962 cars is the two ply tire. These are just as strong as the old four-ply design, but producers claim they give a softer ride and better gas mileage. Suspension remains about the same except for de tailed refinements to improve ride. INCIDENTALS: Lincoln Continental has a hydraulically driven windshield wiper and the only 24-month, 24,000-mile guarantee in the business. Rear-window defrosters have been revived for sedan models of many makes, and so, too, have bucket seats. If you want an air-conditioned convert ible, Cadillac has one.
