OcL 1. 1W1 PAIt t-B Enrollment Bcost Poses Big Problem EUGENE (AP) Enrollment in Oregon's state colleges and uni versities reached 28,898 this morn ing, the chancellor's office re. ported. This is an increase of 15 per cent from last year at the same time and it created a money problem that the state Board of Higher Education moved to meet Sunday. The board, meeting in Portland, said it voted to take (400.000 from student fees resulting from the big increase, plus $13,000 of unappro priated funds, and give it to the institutions. The board said the institutions were to present at the board's Oct. 23-24 meeting in Klamath Falls, figures on how this money would be spent in taking care of the student influx. At the same time the board re ported no action on picking a chancellor to succeed Dr. John R. Richards, who has resigned. Student registration has been completed on practically all cam puses although today is tthe Uni versity of Oregon deadline. The morning figure is believed to be close to final. This Is the breakdown: University of Oregon, 8,788, up 16 per cent over last year at this time; Oregon State University, 9,027, State cent; tion, up 14.4 per cent: Portland College, 5.269, up 16 per Oregon College of Educa-' 1.284, up 16.8 per cent: Southern Oregon College, 1,457, up 6.7 per cent; Eastern Oregon Col lege, 1,069, up 28.6 per cent; U.0. Medical School, 720, up 8.6 per cent; U.O. Dental School, 253 up 2 per cent; Oregon Technical Insti tute, 902, up 19 per cent. ; Hiker Harry J Eyes Record EUGENE. Ore. (AP) - Harry "The hiker" -Johnson is on his' way again this time headed for Charleston, S.C., and an assault on the cross-country hiking rec- ord. Johnson, who hiked from Flor ence on the Oregon coast, to New York City in 133 days earlier this year, hopes to walk from Charles-- ton to Los Angeles in 59 days. This would break the record of; 66 days set a couple of years ago by a pair of British army ser-J geants. This time Harry will sing as he; walks. His faded grey raincoat bears the words "With a Song in' My Heart." "I sing popular songs and class-' ical," he said. "I'm no pro or any thing, but I have had some train-' ing." He hopes to earn enough with his singing along the way to buy a boat ticket to Europe, where he wants to make a hiking and; singing tour. : Harry, 45, has been living with; his brother in Salem, Ore., since returning from his last hike. He failed to get a hoped-for job in the Arabian oil fields as a result of that hike and returned to Salem in search of work. Finding none, he's off again. He plans to hitchhike to Charleston and start his walk about the mid dle of this month. -; "Vou have to gel out and make yourself known in the world." Harry said Friday, just before leaving Eugene.
