1 o o o o o, Last Ditch Pleas Ask Deferment WASHINGTON UP1 1 "I am praying you can, in some way help Robert stay out. . ." Robert Is a specialist fourth class in the National Guard. Like thousands of others he has been recalled to active duty because of the Berlin crisis. The appeal was made by Rob ert s mother to a senator. She asked him to try to get Robert a deferment until he finished col lege. But the National Guard Bu reau denied the senator's request. The last-ditch "write your sen ator" appeals have flooded Capi tol offices since Defense Secre tary Robert S. McNamara or- dered reserve and National Guard units to active duty. Senators Do Best "We have been swamped." one senatorial secretary said. "I have them stacked up on my desk right now. The senators do their best They write or' wire the Army and relay the request for a deferment, postponement, or transfer. They write follow-up letters. When the decision is finally made, they send a telegram to the applicant. The telegram starts either deeply regret ' or "highly pleased as the case may be. "If you have a really good case, you can get a deferment a senatorial aide said. Tippler Tax Suggested LOS ANGELES UPH County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn pro posed Tuesday that the city's drinkers pay for lodging the city's drunks. "We need a tippler tax," Hahn told colleagues .on the Board of Supervisors. He said that drunks make up fa per cent of the pris oners in the city-county jail svs tern and that their maintenance costs $4 million annually. "If we pick up all the drunks off the city streets and throw them on the backs of the county taxpayers, it will mean an addi tional 4-cent property tax," he .said. Baby Sitter Found Shot WALLA WALLA (API Sally Jean Marsh, 19, a baby sitter, was found shot to death Wednesday in the apartment of a man for whose family she had worked. Chester Lee Whilely, 23, restaur ant fry cook who called authori ties, was held (or investigation of homicide. Police Chief A. L. Watts said.
