As the leatherlosscrs return to Madison Square Garden Saturday night, after a month's absence, welterweight champion Emile Griffith of New York makes his second title defense against Cuban Benny (Kid) Paret in a nationally televised return 15-rounder. Griffith, 22, won the 147-pound crown from Paret, 24, at Miami Beach last April 1 on a 13th-round knockout; and he is favored at 13-5 to beat Paret again. Ex - champion Benny hasn't HITS PAYDIRT Shifty Pelican halfback Dave Stippich is about to fall to the turf but he doesn't care because he's in the Ashland end zone. Ore. i.P - Coach Tommy Prothro is deeply disappointed with the offensive! performance but highly pleased with the defensive showing of his Oregon State football team in its 19-8 loss to Syracuse Saturday. "We'll come out of it," he said Sunday, "but it's hard to see how. "I think we were miserable offensively. We fumbled six times, missed assignments and did abou' everything wrong that we could. He said Syracuse, ranked No. 10 nationally in the AP poll, "fooled us very badly with their double-wing slot offensive." I hadn't prepared our boys for it," Prothro said, "and had to put in a defense during the game. Under the circumstances they turned in a remarkable defensive effort." He pointed out that Syracuse scored its three touchdowns after recovering fumbles deep in Ore gon State territory and said, "If we'd played good offense, we'd have won."
