Ruth Millett Newpnper Enterprise Assn. A builder of bomb shelters says there seems to be a psycho logical block keeping Americans Irom getting busy providing them selves with family bomb shelters. He thinks some people actually are "ashamed" of owning shel ters. For Pete's sake do we have to make a bomb shelter a status symbol in order to get Americans interested? If so. why don't we put the advertising boys to work on the job? They've sold us on such status symbols as the second car. the private swimming pool, the va cation" home, the motorboal. the color TV, the stereo, the ranch style suburban home. And they've done it easily, too making us think we're underprivileged if we don't have the latest status symbol. They ought to be able to make the family bomb shelter the very most for status seekers, with one hand tied behind their backs and only one to pound their typewrit ers. When you stop to think of it it's a natural for the advertising copy writers. First they can ap peal to papa. "Will your children be the only ones in the block to HAPPY HOUR CLUB MAUN - The Happy Hour Bridge Club met with Mrs. Frank Victorin Aug. 5. Two tables were in play.' High score was won by Mrs. Charles Johnson and second by Mrs. Lester Schreiner. Re freshments were served to Mrs. George Brothanek. Mrs. Con Johnson. Mrs. Charles Johnson. Mrs. Lester Schreiner, Mrs. Wil liam Dalton, Mrs. Orville Wood and Mrs. George Burgess. be without protection in case ofj nuclear attack?" That ought to he easy for the men who wrote the ads picturing the poor little hoy who had to go to the neigh bors to watch TV. Then they can appeal to mama Just think of what they could do with full color layouts of the in teriors of the homb shelters of the Hollywood stars. They can even appeal to the kids and teen-agers, with bomb shelter parties as the latest in entertaining. Why, if they put their minds to it the advertising copywriters could make the bomb shelter so much of a status symbol that far from heing "ashamed" to own them we would soon be ashamed to admit we didn't have one. We've been living by status symbols for a long time. Perhaps we can be kept from dying by a status symbol, too.
