the 1955 inadvertent libel law.
The school textbook case was
brought by William H. Dickman,
Harold E. Salisbury and LawQce
Smclser in an effort to enjoin
school District No. 62C of Oregon
City from providing the books fori
a Roman Catholic school.
They arffcd that providing the
books is an unconstitutional aid to
religion.
Circuit JudgeTialph Holman of
Giegon City denied the injunction,
thus uO'lding the providing of
the books to parochial schools.
Tne case reached the Supreme
Court on appeal by the three men

In the libel suit, Lucille Holden,
a restaurant operator of Portland

appealed.
ine case centers auuui uie wf

Mason Haynes, aged three, It olive and able to help the Red Cross celebrate the 10th
anniversary of a successful volunteer blood donor program, because his mother's
knowledge of artificial respiration saved him from drowning. A Red Cross volunteer
taught first aid to Mrs. William Haynes of Tulelake, California, and Mrs. Haynes later
'. used the training to save her child's life at Medicine Lake July 15, 1961.
ANNUAL REPORT, July 1, 1960 to June 30, 1961
1,652 PINTS OF BLOOD were returned to Klamath County
this past year from the Red Cross Center in Portland; this
blood is used daily by the sick and injured of our commun
ity. Recipients pay hospital costs of laboratory work and
part of the Red Cross distribution expense, but THERE IS
NO CHARGE FOR THE BLOOD. Hundreds of grateful pa
tients say "Red Cross blood helped save my life".
TWENTY RED CROSS volunteer instructors taught first aid
and home nursing to 532 local residents: in every-day life
or in disaster, this training saves lives!
TWENTY-THREE RED CROSS volunteer ray Ladies and
Social Welfare Aides helped servicemen, their families and
veterans with problems caused by military service. 868 cases
were served. Loans made and grants given totaled $10,060
, -and sometimes money seems a lifesaver!
FOURTEEN KLAMATH FALLS teachers and parents volun
teered their time freely during the school year to help 2,000
elementary school children learn service toothers arrj life
saving skills in Junior Red Cross.
FIFTY-FOUR NURSE VOLUNTEERS, twenty-three canteen
workers, twenty-four staff aides and thirteen physician
- members of the Klamath County Medical Society volun-
teered thousands of hours at bloodmobile operations
throughout Klamath County to collect 2069 pints of blood
... and every pint could help to save a life!
SEVENTcY-ONE VOLUNTEERS gave 2426 hours to help
children and adults & the Klamath Basin learn to swim
and handje small craft. Of the 5,065 children and adults
registered for swimming lessons in the Basin, 1359 earned
and received Red Cross certification. Red Cross swimmers
say "You can't find a better sport to save your ifie."
FOOD, CLOTHING, shelter and rehabifijtrttion given to vic
tims of 342 NATURAL DISASTERS occurring throughout
the United States, financed by your contributions to the
National Red Cross.

SALEM (API The State Fair
Commission said today that a re-
check of its figures show that
223,026 persons attended the fair
during its first five days.
That is 10,000 more than in the
same period a year ago.
Earlier, the commission had
listed the total at 210,000. But this
obviously was an eri. since at
tendance receipts are $4,800 more
than a year ago.
The commission said the error
was made in the fair's money-
counting department.
The commission had a hot argu
ment over the attendance figures
Tuesday.
Ursel Narver, commission chair
man, ' s.-.id attendance records
from 1950 to 1956 are missing, and
that attempts are being made to
restore them.
The error in counting this year's
attendance was made in figuring
the Labor Day crowd, the com
mission said.
