Taxpayers Learning How
To Make Out Own Forms
The Internal Revenue Service his 1960 financial records on hand
during the 1961 income tax filing and to have all the necessary
season will again stress self-help facts in mind. And again let me
as its basic theme of taxpayer remind taxpayers that it will be
assistance. District Director A. G. much easier to prepare a return
Erickson of the Internal Revenue
Service for the state of Oregon
announced.
"The self-help program has now
been in effect about five years,"
Erickson said, "and we believe
that more and more taxpayers
are becoming familiar with the
requirements Tor sound prepara
tion of federal income tax returns.
Essentially, self-help means that
taxpayers complete as much of
their returns as possible before
asking help from us. Most tax-
payers can do the whole job after
a careful reading ot the form it
self and its accompanying instruc
tion booklet.
("We are still going to provide
help for the few persons who for
various reasons are unable to
complete their returns. We shall
again stress our telephone assis
tance program, which will enable
taxpayers with a problem or two
to call us up for a quick answer
designed to enable them to com
plete preparation of their returns.
Office assistance will be avail
able where required but will
naturally entail considerably more
of the taxpayer's time.
"The most important thing to
the taxpayer in preparing a re
turn or in seeking telephone or of
fice assistance is to have all of
or to obtain any help needed now
than during the late stages of the
season when telephone lines are
jammed and offices are crowded."
