Scientists Now Exploring Inner Space Of
SAN THEM. :alif. (AP)-Sc
entists have taken the first real
step in the exploration of inner
space
Their aim: Find out what's in
side the world. Scholars have
wondered for years, and the an
swers may tell us how life began
and how the earth itself came into!
being.
The project is Operation Mo-
hole, being conducted off the
coast of Southern California.
The first step Thursday was the
lowering of more than 3,000 feet
of drill pipe to the ocean bottom
then drilling a few feet into the
sediment. Operations are conduct
ed from a special drilling ship.
Cores punched from the sub.
oceanic bottom will be brought
up in subsequent days. The core
material will be of great interest
to scientists because it comes
from a kind of earth layer never
more than superficially penetrat
ed.
