Students To Present Play Henlev students, grades seven through 12, will present a benefit variety show. "The Soaring '60s' in the high school gymnasium Thursday, March 9, at 7:30 p.m. Each class will present a 20- minute skit to be judged by audience applause. All proceeds will go to the foot ball field lighting fund. The field is being lighted to permit nigh1 athletic events through efforts of the students, faculty and other in terested persons. Baby sitting will be provide!1 for a small charge. Tickets arc $1 for adults, 50 cents for elemen tary and high school students. Tickets will be purchased also b;, members of the show casts. The class is tlie first of a series of six classes cosponsored by the Oregon Association of City Po lice Officers and the Oregon btatc Sheriffs' Association. The classes re being given in 15 Oregon cit ies to city, county and state police officers. City Police Chief Charles A Howard said the local classes will be given in th? Police Rifle Rang classroom. All law enforcement officers are invited to attend. Chamber Like Outer Space BURBANK, Calif. (UPD-In an isolated canyon 30 miles north west of here, scientists are work ing on a project to create the hot test, coldest, most lethal "nothing ness" man has known on earth. Lockheed Aircraft claims the project is the free world's most ambitious attempt to duplicate conditions of space in a vacu um chamber 10 feet In diameter and 10 feet high. I Not Even Close Yet, the vacuum in the cham ber will be far from that existing in interplanetary space, Larmore said. To approach that, the pres sure would have to be reduced at least another million times. Actually, Larmore explained, there is no known way to dupli cate the vacuum of interplanetary space. "We can't keep the steel walls of a chamber from evaporating," he said. "Gas and particles are loosed from the walls as fast as we can pump it out." The project is being undertaken in connection with a planned half airplane, half-spaceship to be used for servicing satellites in or bit. The study is known as SLOMAR space logistics, main tenance and rescue. During simulated missions in the chamber, spacecraft models and materials will be subjected to cold and heat ranging from minus 436 to plus 500 degrees Fahren heit as well as the erosion of radi ation and meteoritic particles. Need Answers How long will spaceship materi als hold up under such evapora tion and erosion? How can wont ing parts be made to operate in environments where ordinary lu bricants simply evaporate? Batteries of quartz lamps and ordinary light bulbs will be used lo simulate some of the radia tions in space within the cham-' ber. Larmore said a flour-like ma terial or perhaps fine ice parti cles would be shot into the cham-j bcr at speeds up to 25.000 miles an hour to simulate the dust and micromcteoritic swarms of space. "For all practical purposes, the spacecraft will bo hurtling through space itself," he said.
