Giants Aware Of Hazards At Candlestick, Says Player PHOENIX. Ariz. (UPI) - Jim Marshall, counted on by new manager Alvin Dark as one of the San Francisco Giants' top utility men, feels that the club now knows some of the hazards of Candlestick Park and will adapt itself and make necessary corrections. Things Look Rosy For NWL Baseball PORTLAND (AP) - With an. other baseball season nearing, things look rosy for the Class B Northwest League, President Jim Fleishman and other league offi cials said Sunday at their annual spring meeting here. There was talk of expansion Trojans Eye Season End On Weekend By TIIE ASSOCIATED PRESS Southern California's Trojans, their first Big Five basketball championship already tucked away, close out their season this weekend with games at home against California on Friday and Stanford Saturday. The Trojans defeated Stanford 79-61 in the Los Angeles Sports Arena Saturday night but already had backed under the crown as UCLA eliminated Washington's Huskies 84-68 In the first game of a twin bill. Rounding out this week's final set of conference games are Stan ford at UCLA Friday and Col at UCLA Saturday. Washington winds up with Idaho Friday and Washington State Sat urday, both non-conference games in Seattle. Each game Saturday was never in doubt, USC posting its eighth victory against two losses. Wash ington finishes at 6-8 and UCLA is 5-5. It took us all of I960 to learn about the tricky winds, get used to playing in the cold and in general be- and, for the first time in years, not one club reported either fi nancial difficulties or waning in terest among fans. "I want th thank you and your boards of directors for keeping the organization together when there were several times it could have folded very easily," Fleish man told the officials of teams from Eugene, Salem, Lewiston, Wcnatchee, Tri-Citics and Yak ima. Fleishman said, too, that Med-1 ford wants to Join the league, pos sibly as early as 1962, and told of a group there that is trying to whip up enthusiasm for a new 25,000-seat stadium. The Pacific Coast League has offered all help possible, Fleish man said. Marshall's left-handed bat, how ever, may be more important than his fielding ability. He's really dug into the inside of the game and definitely has made a study of Candlestick Park. He's come up with some con elusions, too, and will put them to use when the club plays at home. He's going to shorten up on the bat a bit, for one thing. The wind moves the ball and with a shorter grip, the bat is controlled far easier and better, said Marshall. "I also am going to do much more running. Fulled muscles are much easier to get when it's cold and especially this is true ol a utility man who has parked on the bench and then suddenly is called on to play. I'm also going to have some one hit a raft of pop fly balls to me at Candlestick," said Mar shall. "A lot of balls we figured were unplayable but the wind brought them back into play. The wind currents are about the same each day and if we practice play ing the pops we will make put outs instead of giving the batter another chance or giving him a single or double." The fight will be televised na tionally (ABC), starting at to p.m. lESTi. Basilio. ex-welterweight and middleweight king, outpointed Gaspar Ortega in his last fight at New York Jan. 7. The 33-year-old battler from Canastota, N.Y., has won 55 of 77 fights since turning pro in 1948 and has 27 knockouts to his credit. Jordan. 26, won the welter weight title from Virgil Akins in 1958 and lost it to Benny (Kid) Paret last year. He has not fought since last Nov. 26, when he dropped a 10-round decision to Ludwig Lightburn. Jordan has a 49-16-1 log for 66 pro bouts, in cluding 16 knockouts. (UPI) - Duke .Snider reported to spring training in near-perfect shape and it s showing in his perform ance so far this grapefruit sea son, but he says he's still behind the pitchers. I doubt if I could gel a loud foul off of some of those pitchers right now. They re ready, said the outfielder-avocado rancher. Snider reported to camp late be cause of a skin ailment for which he was being treated in Los An geles, but when he climbed on the scales upon arrival the indi cator slopped at far less than it did the previous spring. Duke weighed 191 after Sun day's drills. "1 feel stronger now and I'm in better shape than last spring," he said. "But I'm not going to make any predictions. I'll just keep swinging, that's all." Snider hit only .24.1 last season for. the Dodgers, a full 65 points below his 1959 average, when the club won the National League pennant and beat the White Sox in the World Series.
