J' I - ma-Lut J A-l TOURNEY DOOR OPENS The Klamath Union Pelican varsity basketball team, despite the fact they were working without the services of two of the top performers in the Southern Oregon Conference, found they had the key to MacArthur Court (University of Oregon) Friday night when they trampled the vaunted Medford Black Tornado 63-56, their third straight triumph over the "wind" this season; The lad chiefly responsible for the win was junior reservist Kent Hunsaker pictured at far left Owing Sprague CHILOQUIN (Speeial)-Sprague River became the eighth team to win a berth in the big All-Indian Basketball tournament to be staged here March 46-17-18 by the Klamath Reservation Jaycees by whipping the Chiloquin Thun- derbirds 71-69 in the elimination tourney finals in Chiloquin Thurs-j day night. Ron Owings connected for the highest total in the three day Pa cific Coast eliminations, 42 points, to insure the SR triumph. Owings bagged 14 two-pointers and 14 for 23 shots from the foul line for his big total, but even at that he wasn't without com petition. The losers' Jackie Barney pulled in 31 markers with 10 from the Oregon Tech Cagers Envision Oregon Collet Olegon Tech Owl , basketball, coach Wally Palmberg has a prob lem. He has a pair of top-flight bas ketball players, one a 6-3 forward, and the other a 5-11 guard, both stickouls and both newly eligible, and he doesn't know exactly where to fit them into his pro gram. Other coaches wish they had the same sort of woe. He has another problem, how ever, one just as, immediate. He has to figure a way to defeat the Southern Oregon College Red Raiders for the fourth time this: season and thus establish air all-time first in the history of Oregon Tech basketball. The Raider will arrive on the OTI campus Tuesday night . . . and he has to be beaten to pre ' serve the Owls hope for a clear cut Oregon Collegiate Conference championship. That, plus the fact the Owls must win two from Ore gon College next weekend, while I Ihe Portland State Vikings, he hoes, are at least splitting with the Eastern Oregon College Moun ties. in Portland. t The Raiders may not be an easy mark Tuesday in spite of the fact the Tcchmen have meas ured them twice on their home floor and one at OTI. plus ,the light-heartedness evident at Oregon Tech since the Owl quint ecms to have come of age. In the not too distant past there were indications that the Owls possessed a "who cares" altitude.: . Such is not the case today at! OTI. And practice yesterday and today while the rooting section rested, proved the point. Owl coach Palmberg compounds the new spirit with the comment, "I wish we were starting over. Today we have a club with a tre mendous will to win." If the "will to win" holds up. the Techmen could own an OCC title by this lime next week. Friday night's convincing Pelican victory over Med ford is virtual assurance that the KU cagers will make the trek to Eugene in March as the number one repre sentative of the Southern Oregon Conference. Granted, there is a remote possibility of a tie . . . hut how re mote cad you get? The Tornado the Pelicans would have to lose to even land a tie for the league top And, while I'm not a real whole hearted betting man, I would wa ger a week's salary that this is not about to happen. Now ... say the Pels do go as number one . .V it appears that they will meet St. Helens in the opening night of the prep clas sic. This should be interesting . . . Dean White's ox-assistant, Gene Strehlou, is coaching the Lions, remember. Incidentally, the other night In the dressing room after the game . . . sidelined Pel Wally Palm herg was all praise for Kent Hun sakcr's performance . . . and Bruce Brickner commented, "I'm getting sore from sitting down, . . . but maybe I'd better get used to it . . . Dear Mr. Scott, Everybody loves a winner, and every other basketball team in the county has won enough times to feel the warm glow except Bly. So we look for the crumbs ("we" means the team AND their fans) in the sports write-ups. The best "crumb" to date is when you said "Malin found the going a little tougher than Ijjey expected." Once you said a team "toyed with the Bob cats" this rankled! Usually you "dumped," or "squelched. " All last year we were called "the diminutive Bobcats" and you actually printed a letter from an unfortunate egomaniac coach calling his season with us "a nightmare!" Our boys haven't chalked up a winning score yet this season, but we have won a game I refer to the game with Sacred Heart on Feb. ID. We were six points ahead It was tied at the end and our best man was benched in the overtime, and even the Sacred Heart players admitted that the refs failed to call some of their obvious fouls! We needed to win at least O.NK game, for the boys' and their wonderful coach's sake and this game, our only chance, was GIVEN to Sacred Henri. We chalked up 54 points against Bonanza.
