March 12 Jury failed to agree on verdict in murder trial ot nr. R. Bernard Finch and Carole Tre- coff. charged with killing ur. March 21-Riots at Sharpeville, Union of South Africa, killed 66 Africans, injured scores more and touched off a series of vio lent demonstrations against the racial Dolicies of the govern ment. I always thought teachers were expected to presents confidences just as aoc , tors, lawyers and clergymen do, A certain teacher was in a so cial group the other evening and someone asked how So-And-So's ton was doing in her class. I was hocked and disappointed when the teacher gave a full five-minute report on the boy's stupidity, his laziness and inability to get alone with others. Tells Siory Of '60 capture of its pilot, Francis Gary Powers. Khrushchev Drone up tne summit meeting at Paris, May 16, over the incident and canceled Eisenhower's projected visit to Russia, Powers was convicted of spying Aug, 19 and sentenced to 10 years loss ot liberty. May 2 Caryl Chessman was executed at San Quentin Prison, 12 years and 8 stays of execution after his conviction for a series of sex kidnaps in the Los An geles area. May (J Princess Margaret Rose of Britain was married to Antony Armstrong-Jones, a commoner photographer. May 12 Crashes ot Eiectra air liners ' in Texas in September, 1959, and at Tell City, Ind., in March, 1960, were revealed to have been caused by oscillation at high speeds which caused wings to sheer off. Speed limits were set for the planes pending modi fication. May 15 The Soviet Union launched a 9,988-pound space ve hicle said to contain a dummy man. May 21-June 20 A series of violent earthquakes rocked cniie, killing an estimated 5,000 persons and leaving about two million homeless. May 23 Israel announced cap ture of Adolph Elchmann, leader in Nazi efforts to exterminate the Jews. A diplomatic disagreement with Argentina resulted from rev elation that he had been taken by Israeli agents In that country. June 30 The Congo was grant ed sovereignty by Belgium, one of 16 African nations to achieve statehood during the year. A wave of violence caused United Na tions' troops to be dispatched two weeks later to keep order in the divided nation July 17 Russia announced it had shot down a U.S. RB47 plane which had been missing over the Baltic, and that two survivors were being held for trial. July 20 The U.S. Polaris mis sile was fired successfully for the first time from a submerged nu clear submarine. Auk. 11 The U.S. accomplished Its first recovery of a payload from a space satellite, a nose cone ejected from Discoverer XIII. This recovery, from the seas, was followed by air catches of similar satellite drops. Aug. 16 Organization ot Amer- lean States foreign ' ministers opened meeting in Costa Rica at which they voted to sever diplo matic relations and impose eco nomic sanctions and arms em bareo on the Dominican Repub lie for Its "acts ot aggression and Intervention" in a plot against1 the Venezuelan government. The OAS also condemned Communist Intervention In the affairs of Amer lean nations in a resolution which did not mention Cuba by name but caused the Castro govern ment to walk out of the meeting Aug. 25 Olympic Games open at Rome. Sept. 4-12 Hurricane Donna, de scribed as the most destructive in Weather Bureau history, killed 118 persons in Puerto Rico and other Caribbean Islands and tra veled the length of the U.S. East Coast, killing 30 more persons before passing out to sea. Sept. 19 Soviet Premier Khrush chev arrived in New York for opening of the U.N. General As sembly. He remained until Oct. 13. Other Soviet bloc leaders, in cluding Cuba's Castro, attended the session. Oct. 13 The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the New York Yankees, four games out of seven, to win a World Series for the first time since 1925. Nov. 8 Sen. John F. Kennedy became the youngest man and the first Roman Catholic to be elected president of the United States, defeating Vice President Richard M. Nixon in a photo fin ish with less than a majority of all votes cast. , Nov. 14 Two New Orleans ele mentary schools integrated under court order touching off violent demonstrations by white mothers and a virtual boycott of the schools by white students. Nov. 16-Clark Gable, "The King" of the movies, died of a heart attack in Hollywood at the age of 59. Nov. 25 Mrs. John F. Kennedy, wife of the president-elect, gave birth to their first son and second child, John F. Kennedy Jr. Dec. 13 Dean Rusk, president of the Rockefeller Foundation and assistant secretary of state in the Truman administration, desig nated by Kennedy as his secre tary of state. Dec. 15 King Baudouin married in Brussels to Dona Fabiola de Mora y Aragon of Spain, giving Belgium its first queen since the death of Baudoum's mother in 1935. Dec, 16 At least 134 persons killed in the in-air collision of a United -Air Lines DC8 jet and a Trans World Airlines Constella tion over New York, and subse quent crashes In Brooklyn and Staten Island. Discounts Harm Done By Inflation WASHINGTON (AP)-The aver age American family wasn't seri ously hurt by the big postwar in flation, a government report indi cated today. ' The Census Bureau said family incomes increased more than twice as fast as living costs be tween 1947 and 1959. It said that after taking inflation into account, median incomes rose from $4,000 to $5,400 during the twelve years. Without adjustment for inflation, Incomes were up from $3,000 to $5,400. Median income divides all fam ilies into two equal groups, with half earning more and half earn ing less. The report also showed a steady movement of many families Into higher income brackets. For ex ample, less than 25 per cent of all families reported incomes be low $3,000 in 1959, compared with about 50 per cent in 1947. Of the nation s 45 million fam ilies, about one in eight had an income of $10,000 or more in 1959. City Sued Because ; Of Branch CORVALLIS (AP) - Corvallis city officials are being sued for $30,000, accused of permitting a tree limb to hang lower over a street than an ordinance stipu lates. Joseph F. Wood of Portland, who said he was forced to leave Oregon State College because of injuries suffered in an accident involving the tree limb, filed the suit in circuit court here. Named as defendants were City Manager John Porter, City Engi neer V. L. Goodnight, Mayor Gor don Harris and the nine members of the City Council. Because the city has no liability insurance for its employes or council representatives, City At torney LaVerne Johnson advised them to seek Individual legal ad vice. Wood said a city ordinance stip ulates a tree cannot hang lower than 12 feet above a city street. He said the tree In question was 9 feet, 8 Inches above the street, He was passenger in a truck 9 feet, 8 inches high that hit the limb of the tree, he said, adding he was thrown from the truck, and landed head first on the pave ment. Wood said he suffered perma nent head Injuries that required him to drop out of college.
