Johnson, D-Tcx., apparently are going to retain control of the Senate Demo cratic Policy Committee in the pew Congress. Democratic leaders are reported to have agreed on the selection of Sens. Warren G. Magnuson of Washington and John 0. Pastore . of Rhode Island to fill two vacan cies on the group which passes on legislation to be placed before the Senate. Magnuson and Pastore class themselves as liberals. But their expected selection mav be greeted with something less than enthusi asm by such past critics of John .. ton's middle-road course as Sens. Paul Douglas of Illinois and . Joseph S. Clark Jr. of Pennsylvania. 'As the committee is beginning 'r to stack up, self-styled liberals " apparently are going to be in the majority. WASHINGTON (AP) The i J: Roman Catholic Church has ex- ! pressed gratitude to Protestant, and Jewish leaders who defended It during the 1960 presidential campaign. A year-end report Tuesday by the National Catholic Welfare ' Conference spoke of the year as a prosperous, if stormy one. Commenting on the campaign in which a Catholic was elected president for the first time, the report said: "Hundreds of thou sands of pamphlets were distrib uted across the country maintain ing that a man must have divid ed loyalty if he is Catholic as well as American. Nixon has - turned down an invitation to par ' licipate in a"'Tribule to a Patriot" TV show praising President Ei enhower. Nixon's press secretary. Herbert .v . G. The first contingent of five Marines arrived Wednesday at the John G. Hansford home. More are on the way. Before the old year dies, the five-bedroom Rans- ford home may be housing more than a dozen Marines. Donald (Butch) Ransford, 22, a Marine corporal, takes full re sponsibility for the invasion. He landed from Okinawa on Dec. 16 after 16 months service for a leave. He 'telephoned his mother and told her he had invited 32 of his buddies to her house "after Christmas." Fifteen, he added hesitantly, had accepted the bid. Donald's brother, Jerry, 20. re porting five of Donald's buddies had arrived Wednesday, added: "We got a telephone call from others saying a car with seven will arrive but we don't know when or from where. And then there are supposed to be more hitch-hiking from Cincinnati." Mrs. Itansford. who at first didn't believe Donald's story, found it was true when he ar rived home Dec. 19. The family started preparing, frantically. A 23-pound turkey was cooked 1 Wednesday. A 60-cup percolator, borrowed from a fraternal group, was ready for constant perking. The refrigerator was stacked with food. A milk company offered emergency service. Mattresses, pillows and bed clothing, also borrowed, were stacked upstairs ready for the emergency. Neighbors heard about Butch's invitation and many brought in food. The Marines already have 10 invitations to dinner from friends and neighbors. The first big event !was dinner at the Itansford home Wednesday night for the fust ar rivals, all from the Chicago area. Mrs. Itansford appeared going Give-Away Man Being Sought PORTLAND (AP) - Earlier this month, Morris Pruitt Quintard stood on a downtown street cor ner here and gave away $2,500 his life's savings to Skid Road residents. Then he disappeared. Now police are looking for him but only because they want to help him. OREGON FOOD STORES Official Recount Puts Hawaii's Electoral Vote In Kennedy Total WASHINGTON (AP)-An offi cial recount in Hawaii has tipped the newest state to President-elect John F. Kennedy by lis votes. That gives Kennedy 303 elec toral votes to 219 for Vice Presi dent Richard M. Nixon; 269 were needed to win. Sen. Harry F. Byrd, D-Va., got 15. With Hawaii's new totals, an nounced Wednesday more than seven weeks after the election, the final national popular vote goes like this: Kennedy 34,221,531. . , Nixon 34,106.474. Plurality for Kennedy: 113.057 out of a total vote of 68.832,778. Other candidates got a total of 502.773, so that Kennedy's total still is less than a majority of all the popular votes. Nixon at first had been listed as the winner in Hawaii by 141 votes. But Democrats gained a recount of all its precincts by cit ing errors in the certified returns. With Hawaii finally settled, Ken nedy carried 23 states; Nixon car ried 26. Mississippi s eight un pledged votes went to Byrd, who also received six electoral votes from Alabama and one from Okla homa. The Electoral College voted on Dec.- 19, making Kennedy's elec tion official. The result will be presented to Congress Jan. 6. Both Republican and Democratic Hawaiian electors cast votes Dec. 19, since the outcome was still up in the air. Now, after some legal paperwork, Hawaii's Dem ocratic votes will be the ones that count. The word alfalfa means "best fodder."
