Like evergreen trees, holly and mistletoe have long histories ol relationship to Christmas. One le gend savs that Christ s crown ol thorns was plaited from holly. Be fore the Crucifixion its berries were white;' but the holly berries in the Lord's crown turned crim son and the plant has had crim son berries ever since. Mistletoe's relationship to Christmas is non religious, coming from certain old Scandinavian myths that passed over into Christian lore when the pagan tribes were converted. II was a symbol of love and so it still is. The origin of Christmas stock ings is verv obscure. One legend says that the original St. Nicholas gave gifts of gold to a poor man and his daughters in a stocking. This gave rise to another legend which says that one Christmas Eve Santa Claus. in the perfor mance of his gift-giving duties. accidentally dropped some gold coins down a chimney which fell into a stocking left by the fire side to dry. Thus the custom be gan. Actually, the Christmas stocking tradition probably began in Germany along with the Christ mas tree, but no one knows for certain. 'There are many other Christ' mas customs and legends, says Freund. "For example, every country has its own ideas about St. Nicholas.
