Advent Focuses On Both Rrst Second Coming PACK S-B ' Wednesday, Dee. tl. UN . HERALD AND NEWS, KUmatk FalU, Oregoa By LOUIS CAS8ELS - ' VtlUi Ptcm Iateraatkeul J On the ancient calendar of the ; ajhristian year, the four weeks ; preceding Christmas are known as - .the Advent season. The name Is derived from a '" Latin word (adventus) which T.aneans "comine." .''. According to the Encyclopedia t 'ef Religion, advent is "intended : -to remind Christians of the first ; "-coming of Christ as savior, and ; of His second coming as judge of -the world." This definition may surprise - ' come church members. The mod' ern Advent observance tends to focus almost entirely on the first , ''coming of Christ, as baby born Bethlehem nearly 2,000 years J ago. Relatively little stress is laid . '. on the equally basic article of the Nicene Creed which asserts tnai: ,r "He shall come again, with glory, to Judge both the quick and ;-. the dead." ;' Why has it become unfashion ';' able to talk about the second com. - ing of Christ? ! Dwelled on by Fanatics One obvious reason is that the ', 4- subject has been appropriated by ' ' fanatics who insist on trying to : , predict when and bow it will oc ; f cur. . Intelligent Christians do not . - wish to have their faith identified ..with such easy targets of ridicule, :And if they have read the Bible " they know that Jesus explicitly condemned all attempts to fore- i' cast the time of His return. He -simply told his disciples to live " ;-as though he would be returning .at any moment. There Is another reason why - the first coming of Christ is ; x more popular topic for Advent y sermons than His second coming. ' . - The incarnation was God s su ' preme revelation of Himself as a ' : : loving and merciful father who ..is prepared to go to incredible ; "lengths to achieve a reconciliation .with the ' human creatures who Grange News FORT ROCK ; FORT ROCK - Mrs. SarOda rKbnsey of . It is not so comforting to bi reminded that He is also a just and righteous God who will some day call men to account for their lives. Yet the concept of a last judg ment, however uncongenial it may be to modern minds, cannot be excised from Christianity. It is found in all of the historic creeds, at many places in the Bible, and in the teachings of Christ Himself. There are some lurid apocalyp tic passages in the New Testa ment which many Biblical schol ars attribute to the fervent imag ination of the primitive church rather than to the teachings of Jesus. But there is at least one de scription of the Last Judgment which unmistakably radiates the authentic spirit of Jesus. It is found in the 25th chapter of the Gospel according to St. Matthew. Parable Poetic Imagery Included in a collection of Je sus parables, it contains the kind of poetic imagery that He often used in describing the Kingdom of God: ' "When the Son of Man shall come in His glory, ana all inc holy angels with Him, then shall He sit upon the throne' of His alorv. "And before Him snau oe gathered all nations; and He shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. "And He shall set the sheep on His right hand, and the goats on His left. Then shall the King say unto them on His right hand, come, you blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared tor . you from the foundation of the world 'For I was hungry and you gave Me meat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me drinic; i was a stranger and you took Me in; Naked, and you clothed Me; i was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came unto Me. Then shall the rightous answer Him, saying. Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You? Or thirsty, and gave You drink? When did we see You a stran- ser and take You In? Or naked, sad clouted You?, or wnen am we see You sick or In prison, and came to You? "And the King shall answer and say unto them, verily I say unto you, inasmuch as you nave done it unto the least of these My brethren, you have done it unto Me." ' SEASON'S GREETINGS . And in the air, an incense combining odors of can dles, faint wood smoke, and the fragrance of a fresh Christmas tree. The light wavers on young heads bowed over worn books of Christmas carols. Above the crackling of the stove rise the young voices blending witn tne chords of an old organ. They sing of the first Christmas. This is no stage set. This is real This is Christmas in a corner of 20th century America. The Ver mont towns of Granby and Vic tory have no public power for electric lights or for television sets. Besides the time and effort in- volved in giving their children a community Christmas, there is a calculated risk. Townsmen seated in the worn, brown pews cast wor ried glances at the candles on the tree. Buckets of water stand handy. Outside are shovels beside banked-up snow. The villagers. In two years, have raised $2,000 to bring elec tric lines to their hamlets. It will cost much more. But they keep hoping that next year they will all have their best Christmas present electricity.
