Soran, ion of Mr. and Mrs. Pat Soran of Klanv ath Falls, after having been ap pointed to the United States Mer 1 1 chant Marine Academy, Kinst Point, N.Y., last August, has suc cessfully completed his first aca Idemic quarter of the four year course which will prepare him for a career as an engineering I officer in the American Mer chant Marine. The United States Merchant Ma rine Academy, established in 1943, is one of the youngest of tha five federal academies and serves our Merchant Marine as West Point ' and Annapolis serve the Army and Navy. In fact, Kings I Point graduates the best trained merchant officers in the world. While at Kings Point during his first year, plebe year, Cadet Sor an will pursue a rigorous aca demic curriculum encompassing such subjects as English, college mathematics, basic nautical sci ence, chemistry, basic marine en gineering, engineering drawing, welding, and machine shop, as well as extensive military train ing essential for a successful ca reer at sea. ' Cadet Soran was graduated in 1960 from Henley High School prior to entering Kings Point. - David E. Duarte Is On Destroyer David E.
