'Messiah' Brings Christmas To City By NORM CARDOZA Until Sunday evening, the holi day season so far this year for me was tinsel, Santa Claus, Xmas and the racket of cash reg isters. The star of the show was a baby boy, born in a stable about 2,000 years ago. Everyone who gets tired of "Ru dolph the Red Nosed Reindeer," Dancer, Prancer and Vixen and fallen arches from the mad crush of Christmas shopping should take in a performance of "Messiah" to refresh his understanding of the greatest of all holidays. Not that the music even the cream of the original work seems so inspired. Handel, to one who likes music but who is unsophisti cated in its technicalities, gets a little boring even considering the period in which he lived. But when his big, well-bred 1 OPEN NITES I jjj , ,ji I ii IS L work gets 'a treatment from such an overwhelming number of mu sicians, thi results are awesome with grandeur. That so many could be trained so well in so short a time to pro duce such excellent music speaks well for M. Dale Hallack, direc tor. Hallack is director of vocal music at KUHS, too. But that so few came to listen must have been frustrating for Hallack and the musicians. Peli can Court isn't very big. It holds a maximum of around 1,200 per sons. Fewer than 1,000 came. If you total all the hours spent practicing by all of the perform ers and the hours spent listening by all of the audience, the ratio is disappointing. , The show lasted exactly two hours, including the 10-minute in termission. The four soloists added a lot of polish to the performarice. All have had a considerable amount of professional or semi-professional experience. They were Mrs. Virginia Cecil, soprano, and Mrs. Adelaide Spen cer, contralto, both of Ashland, and the Rev. L. J. Hall, tenor. and Lt. R. G. Bratton, baritone, both of Klamath Falls. City police charged Fred John Greibel, 227 North First Street, with drunkenness in an automobile following an accident on the South Sixth Street overpass early Sun day morning. Officers said they received a report that a pickup truck had straddled the island on the over pass. When officers arrived, the truck was gone. They found one answering the description parked in a lot nearby, with Greibel asleep inside. At the police station, Greibel denied that he was the driver, of ficers said. (AP) - Bruce Pearsall's complaint that the Village shouldn't keep raising his taxes unless it pays more rent on City Hall appears to be set-; tied. The town fathers announced they are buying City Hall. The building which houses the village offices and court has been rented from the Pearsall family since 1954. In that time, Pearsall said, his taxes have risen from $775 to $1,835 annually, while the rent he collected from the village remained at $4,200 a year. He threatened to evict the vil lage.
