DENNIS THE MENACE" Hopes for holding the annual Basin Junior Rodeo at the Klam- 8th County Fairgrounds in 1961 were expressed during the no- TB Association Sends Out Gifts Gifts and greeting cards were mailed last week from the Klam ath County Tuberculosis and Health Association to Klamath residents who will spend Christ- jnas in tuberculosis hospital beds. Five from this county, four men and a 7-year-old boy, are receiv ing treatment at the Oregon Tu berculosis Hospital in Salem, and two other men from here are pa tients in the tuberculosis ward of .the Veterans Administration Hos pital at Portland, according to Mrs. Dean Miller, association president. During Christmas week at the state hospital, patients are enter tained by caroler groups and spe cial organ music. Dr. R. E. Jo seph, the superintendent, visits all of the wards on Christmas Eve while Santa Claus distributes gifts. Even Opponents Have Their Respect! Bob Hunt, Jim McGilvray Luther Noble, Louis Randall and Elvin Hall, directors. WASHINGTON (AP)-Even his opponents agree that Arthur J. Goldberg, the new secretary of labor, is a man with a steel-trap mind. Goldberg, as general counsel of the United Steelworkers Union, argued labor's case last year be fore the Supreme Court in a dis pute over a Taft-Harley injunc tion to halt the marathon steel strike. I The court allowed the injunc tion to stand, and Goldberg lost his case. But after it was over, a steel company lawyer came up to him and said: Of course you were all wrong, but you argued it so brilliantly." And some of the Supreme Court justices themselves have been quoted as saying privately that they bad never heard a more bril liant presentation in the great marble chamber. But Goldberg is not a calculat ing machine. He smiles easily and for 25 years has gotten along well in the top echelons of big labor. He also is special counsel to the AFL-CIO and was one of those who implemented the merger of the two labor organizations. At 52 Goldberg has graying hair, wears thick framed black spectacles and dresses impeccably. He was the youngest of eight children born to near-penniless immigrant parents in Chicago. He remembers what it is to be poor. He can be expected to play a lead ing role in the Kennedy adminis tration'! drive to raise minimum wages. Goldberg worked his way through Northwestern Law School and made a scholastic record that stood for many years before it was matched. He was admitted to practice at the age of 21. From the beginning he was a labor law yer. The late Philip Murray brought him into his Steelworkers Union as counsel and later as general counsel to the CIO when Murray became its president. During World War II Goldberg played a behind-the-scenes part in the Office of Strategic Services. He organized an espionage net work of anti-Nazi labor union offi cials throughout Europe. By all accounts it was very effective. Goldberg if credited with per suading Vice President Richard M. Nixon and Labor Secretary James P. Mitchell to step in ac tively to end the deadlock of the record 116-day steel strike that started last fall, Goldberg is married to the for mer Dorothy Kurgans, a well known abstract painter. They have two children.
