'-'DENNIS THE MENACE" Lone Survivor Tells Of Plane Crash NEW YORK (UPI (-Stephen Baltz, 11, watched the snow swirl ing over New York City from the window of the big plane taking him to a family Christmas reun ion. He didn't know he was blessed by fate. Minutes later he was lying burned and broken in a snow bank on a Brooklyn street. The flames from the burning airliner lighted his dazed and bleeding face. , "Am I going to die?" ke mur mured through burned lips. But Mephen was lucky. He was the only survivor of the nation's worst air crash. The other 127 passengers on two planes died. He is expected to live. Stephen was thrown from the broken tail section of the United Air Lines DC8, his clothes flam ing with burning jet fuel. A policeman beat out the flames and wrapped him in his rain coat. A woman called for blankets which were thrown to her from windows of apartments and an other man held an umbrella over the injured boy to shield him from the snow and sleet. "Mommy, Daddy," he kept say ing. "He was in terrific pain," Mrs. Dorothy Fletcher said, "but he had only one complaint." "My legs are so cold," she quoted Stephen as saying. Two Killed In Oregon Car Crashes By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Two persons died in traffic ac cidents in Oregon Friday night, raising the state's traffic toll for the year to 447 in the Associated Press tabulation. Jerry Lee Mehrlich, 14. son of Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Mehrlich, Portland, was killed and four per sons were injured in an intersec tion collision at Hatsey Blvd., and 148th Avenue in the Northeast Portland suburbs. He was a pas senger In a car driven by his brother, Robert, 18. The driver of the other car, Mrs. Marjory Roberts, 42, and two of her chll dren, also were Injured. Jean Frances Loganbill, 37, Sa lem, was fatally injured when the car she was riding in rolled over and nit a power poie on Highway 99-E one mile south of Woodburn shortly before mid night. She was alone in the car. It was found he had a broken leg, internal injuries and burns over much of his upper body. He gave his wallet to a doctor and asked him to call his father. He roused again during treatment to -tell doctors his mother was waiting for him at the airport. Stephen, of Wilmette, 111., had been put on the plane Friday morning by his father, W. S. Baltz, vice president and general counsel of the Admiral Corp. His sister and mother were in New York visiting his grandparents and were waiting for him at ldlewild Airport. Stephen told doctors why he never arrived: ' "I remember looking out the plane window at the snow below covering the city. It looked like a picture out of a fairy book. Then all of a sudden there was an ex plosion. "The plane started to fall and people started to scream. I held on to my seat and then the plane crashed. "That's all I remember until I woke up here," he said.
