.VIC Haiti Expels High Church Official; Said Aiding Communist Plotters PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti (AP) Roman Catholic Archbishop lTronmis Poirier. long a foe of President Francois Duvalier, was secretly hustled ouLof Haiti Thurs day night with no baggage and no money except a Dorrowea aoiidi The highest church official of this Negro Catholic republic was accused of giving $7,000 tq aid striking students accused by the government of being involved in rnmmunist clotting. To deal with ibc strike the government ie- clared martial law last Tuesday. Thursday it closed all schools for rhristmas vacations a month ahead of time. (The archbishop. 56, said on ar. rivfrig in Miami Thursday that the charges against him were "entire ly false." He is going back to his native Brittany in France.) The churchman's expulsion was swift. Police and presidential guards arrested him at his office end escorted him to the airport where thev bought him a ticket for Miami. He was put on a plane without any clothes except the white cassock he was wearing and with only a dollar loaned him by e priest. The police escort refused to comment and told reporters: "We are awaiting the arrival of a friend." Claude Raymond, com mander of the presidential guard, and Haitian Police Chief Daniel Eeauvoir watched the, departure, A communiaue broadcast later bv Defense Minister Aurcle Jo seph said the banishment was be cause the prelate aided me stu dent strikers. President Duvalier did not men tion the expulsion when he ad dressed a rally of 6,000 of his partisans on the lawn of the Na tional Palace. Denouncing "lizards" who op pose him, he said he knew who they are and where they are hid ing. The president's supporters car ried slogans declaring "Duvalier is the last formula" and "Duva lier or death." , The sovernment's charges con cerning the student strike were 'spelled out at 'a news conference! by Gen. Pierre Merceron, the army chief, and Joseph Baguidy, foreign minister and acting educa tion minister. Haiti University students went en strike Monday demanding the release of Joseph Roney, student union treasurer, who was arrested In September on charges of dis tributing Communist tracts. Baguidy held up a small white1 flag with red hammer and sickle and the numerals "26" on it. He said the flag was found at the oldest college in the city. Cuban Prime Minister Fidel Castro's revolution has 'be-n called the 26th of July Movement. Baguidy said the strike was the work of "professional agitators, foreign and Haitian, who are brandishing the hammer and sickle." : Haiti, which shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic, was invaded by a rebel band of 31 men in August 1959. The government said all but one were Cubans and that all were killed or captured. At about the same time the gov ernment's dispute with church leaders bobbed up with the expul-J sion of two priests. They were Father Etienne Gricnenbcrger, rector of Saint Martial, the larg est Catholic College, and Father Joseph Marrec, a village priest. Clement Bardot, uuvaners press secretary, said at the time that Grienenberger advised "un derground elements responsible for a bombing which wounded 42 persons and also contacted army officers in an attempt to stir up a revolt. The priest said the ex pulsion was part of a concerted campaign against the church. The arrest of Archbishop Poirier was ordered at that time after he protested the expulsions. The order was suspended the next day after the Vatican newspaper L'Osscrvatore Romano warned that Haitian officials could incur excommunication, or denial of the sacraments. Police with clubs also invaded Port au Prince Cathedral and scattered worshippers who appar enlly were silently protesting the expulsions. Bardot charged that Archbishop Poirier and certain French priests were supporting Duvalier s oppo sition despite a concordat with the Vatican not to mix in Haitian pol itics. Duvalier, a country doctor who is a Roman Catholic as well as an authority on voodoo witchcraft, was sworn in as Haiti's 34th pres ident three years ago for a six- year term. His inauguration came after 11 months of turmoil in which Haiti had six government uoscts following the ouster of President Paul Magloirc. He was regarded as the cham pion of Haiti's deep blacks, as distinguished from the light skinned Creoles. His tough rule, bolstered by several periods of states of siege, has survived sev eral plots. ,. By ANN LANDERS Dear Ann Landers: My hus band and I do not eat meat on Friday. His sister-in-law who be longs to the same religious faith doesn't pay any atten tion loathe re ligious rules. According to her it's a lot of nonsense. I have no quarrel with her and as far as I'm concerned she can do as she pleases. However, the question I would like to ask is this: My sister-in-law and her husband go to my mother-in-law's home at least twice a week for dinner. My husband and I go, also. My mother-in-law is a mar velous cook and it is her great est pleasure to have us over for meals. On Fridays my mother-in-law does not serve meat. This sister- in-law brings a nice juicy steak for herself. Do you think it is proper? My mother-in-law has never complained, out l Know she doesn't like it. ASKING Dear Askiug: Your sister-in-law has poor judgment, worse man ners, and apparently her religion doesn't mean anything to her el ther. If she is unable to live without a steak on Friday she should have the decency to stay at home and eat It by herself. Officials Ask Protection For Loch Ness Monster INVERNESS, Scotland (AP)-A police chief whose beat is the Scottish Highlands called today'for a special act of Parliament to protect the Loch Ness monster against human villainy. At the moment we don't know whether the monster can be properly helped under the law," said J. R, Johnstone, chief con stable of the County of Inverness. Everybody accepts that some thing strange lives in the Loch, but nobody knows whether it's an animal or a fish or something completely outside our expert ence." Johnstone who has been county police for the past 10 years, said that without new legislation his men might not be able to slop adventurers trying to kill or catch the creature in dangerous experi ments. "Any such nonsense will be stopped before it ever begins,' Johnstone said firmly. "I would welcome real scientific investiga tions but bombing the monster is out of the question." As he spoke in an interview in stately Inverness Castle, Loch Ness brooded under a thick fog, A few lights winked through the mist under the Black Mountains but they came only from fishing trawlers. If the monster was around no one could see him from the shore. This has been a poor year for the brute. Only about a dozen sightings have been recorded in the 24-mile stretch of water which goes down to 900 feet in parts. Most descriptions roughly co incide on the essentials: - The monster Is about 30 feet long, with three or more humps on its scaley back, has a lashing tali and a little flat head with bulging eyes. It is capable of great speed through the water- PLEASE see"Midnight Lace" from the BEGINNING in order to fully enjoy this suspense -drama! Dear Ann Landers: I have been going with a man for three years. We finally decided to get mar ried. He kept stalling me off until one day I said, "Something is wrong what is it?" He told me he was already married and that his wife was in a mental institution. He has hand ed me so many lies about minor and major things that I don't know if he is lying about this, too. I asked him to bring some papers to prove it. So- far he has not brought any proof. I told him to leave me alone but he keeps dropping around where I work, and calling me on the phone. I just don't know if I should trust him a little longer in the hope that he will figure out a way to marry me after all Please give me some advice, THELMA Dear Thelma: No matter how you slice it it sounds like baloney. 11 this Romeo has a wife he has business dating you. (UPI) Thanksgiving Day was only three hours and 20 minutes old. The three hitchhiking soldiers. the automobile driver and the op erator of the tractor-trailer were headed west separately on U.S. Route 22. Tr.eir Western Pennsyl vania homes lay ahead. The soldiers were on holiday leave from Fort Devens, Mass. They were racing the clock. Every minute sooner they got home, the more time they could spend with their families. Donald Henderson, 17, who en listed last spring, was headed for South Leechburg. He had told his sister and their widowed mother he would be home for Thanksgiv ing Day. Antonio Magana Jr., 21, Mc- Keesport, was looking forward to a turkey and all the fixings re union with his parents, a brother and two sisters. Harry J., Plumber, 19, was en route to Sidman to rejoin his wife, Ruth. They never reached their des tinations. Death intervened at nearby Fogelsville, more than 200 miles from the destination of each. The soldiers got a lift but they were in the car only mo ments before it was overrun from behind by . the tractor-trailer. Only the drivers survived. The servicemen had made good time after leaving their Army post. They had walked through Fo gelsville buc didn't notice its Pennsylvania Dutch quaintness. The temperature was near freez ing early Thursday and the wind was cold. A motorist stopped to pick them up. The three climbed into the car. They never learned that their good Samaritan was Paul E. Dugan, 21, ot Morann, Pa. (They hardly had a chance to say thanks when the tractor-trailer rammed into the auto, telescop ing it. Magana and Henderson were killed instantly. Plumber died eight hours later in Allentown hospital. Police said the tractor-trailer was operated by Amos Lee Man or, 51, Pittsburgh. Manor was re leased on $1500 bond on involun tary manslaughter charges. Henderson had been home two weeks ago and brought along a buddy, Cpl. .John Le Grande. The corporal was to have made the trip Thursday with Henderson but duties kept him at Fort Devens. In South Leechburg, Hender son's mother noticed it was 7 a.m. Her son had promised to telephone hei then from Monroe ville, where she was to pick him up in the family car. When sha did not receive the call, she went to church. She returned home and found state police there with the news of her son's death.
