BRANNON ILLUSTRATION BY ROBERT SHORE Family Weekly, November II, I960 When Jack Freeman, a coat manu facturer, doubled the fire insur ance on his New York City warehouse, the insurance company was curious." The matter was referred to the National Board of Fire Underwriters for investi gation by its arson squad. The case was assigned to an attractive, petite brunette named Ginnie who was one of the stars of the arson squad. So successful had been her work that she was largely on her own. If she needed help, the board cheerfully paid for it. Ginnie set out to find out all there was to know about Jack Freeman, who lived in a swank apartment house overlooking Central Park. She soon learned that he was deeply in debt and only a step ahead of his creditors. To Ginnie, that condi tion suggested that he might bum the warehouse to collect the insurance. She managed to rent an apartment in a nearby building and with the help of binoculars she could watch Freeman's living room. She followed and identified every visitor. One who aroused her sus picions was a shady chemist just the sort of man who might be engaged to start a fire with inflammables. Ginnie needed help, and she engaged another girl who was a specialist. They watched Freeman's apartment con stantly and observed every meeting he had with the chemist. After the third session, she called her boss. "They're going to touch it off tonight at midnight," she said. "They've already got the stuff in the warehouse a barrel of celluloid waste and a dozen five-gallon cans of ether." Though this was suspicious, it might not hold up in court as evidence unless a fire was actually started. Ginnie pro posed to let that happen, and she had a counter move of her own. Ginnie was waiting a few minutes be fore midnight when a big moving van parked near the warehouse. She knew that a dozen firemen with chemical ex tinguishers were inside, that they would go into action the moment she signaled. She blew a whistle at the first sound of a blast and the firemen raced in. Though flames shot out in every direc tion, the fire fighters were prepared and the blaze was soon put out. Freeman and the chemist were ar rested and charged with arson. Both de nied the conspiracy, but in court Ginnie produced a transcript of the conversa tions between the manufacturer and the chemist, detailing their plot. - Both men were convicted and sent away for long prison terms. Ginnie herself had written down the verbatim record of the conversations be tween the two men as they were re peated to her by her specialist assistant, who watched through binoculars. Though the assistant couldn't hear any thing that was said, she was a teacher in a school for deaf-mutes and was an expert at lip reading.
