JHRBB Farmers Earn Less, Says Expert CORVALLIS (AP)-An Oregon State College extension agricul tural economist said Saturday Oregon farmers appear to be pocketing less money this year than last. Mrs..Elvera Horrell said cash receipts from farm marketings in the first seven months lag behind the same months last year by . about 4 per cent. , She said the decline appeared to result from generally lower .prices on livestock products and smaller total output of crops. She said when the harvest is completed farmers expect ' more corn and oats, but less wheat and barley than last year. Fruit and nut crops have been hard hit by weather, and only apples promise to top last year's output. Mrs. Horrell said corn appeared to be headed for a record produc tion year with acreage and yields up. Oats production inclined up ward with good yields per acre, although acreage had been cut. Oregon's wheat crop lags be hind last year. Barley is down in both yields per acre and acreage. The hay crop may be the largest since records were started 50 years ago. Mrs. Horrell said pears were hurt by poor pollinating weather and scattered early frosts. Cher ries were badly nicked by weather and Oregon's prune crop was vir tually wiped out. Filbert tonnage is down. Wal nuts were expected to reach only half the mark achieved last year. Both sweet corn and snap beans are expected to top all previous highs. Canning beets may also top last year's near-average crop. Looking at fresh vegetables, she taid onions were short of last year and cabbage was down. It was, said T. Harry Williams, "a wonderful war and goodness knows when it will be over." Wil liams is professor of history at Louisiana State University and a recognized authority on the Civil War. If the masses of the people had heen handling matters, the fight ing could have been averted or ended in short order, he said. The hundredth anniversary of the start of (he war will be ob served widely in the United States next year. Department Gives Up Probe For Gun Owner SALEM (AP)-The state Mili tary Department said Friday it lias given up the search for the rightful owner of a World War I German machine gun found hid ilen last month in a cave near Sublimity. The gun, complete with tripod. iy;is found by two small boys on mi exploring expedition. The gun bore a painted legend Identifying its date of capture in I!H8 by the 70th Division. Military Department informa (inn officer Maj. Harvey Latham said the gun apparently was stolen from some veterans club or mu seum, but that a check with po lice agencies, the 79th Division A-ocialion in Philadelphia and Federal Bureau of Investiga tion had failed to develop clues to ilie gun's owner.
