Belton, a veteran state legisla tor of 22 years, discussed public fiscal policies during the opening session of the Oregon Savings and Loan League's annual convention, attended by 100 delegates. In referring to public apathy toward questioning costs of gov-, ernment, Belton reminded the del egates that many programs prom ised by politicians are "financed out of the pockets of people." Belton said voters and candi dates have a dual responsibility of assessing the need and cost of programs for additional govern mental services. We have fallen into the habit of not questioning costs but rather asking, 'What will the government give me'? " he said. Belton, who was appointed state treasurer in January, said that glowing" reports of the 1960s depend upon a sound economy. "XT 5 tfiaKauS-wj? ; OAKRIOGE (AP) - Lesler Wil liam Dretsch, 41, Oakridge, was killed by a bullet Trom his son's rifle in a deer hunting accident on Buck Mountain, southeast of here, Sunday afternoon. Dretsch's death was the second hunting fatality in Lane County this deer season, 'and the fourth in the state. Sheriff's deputies said Dretsch had laken his two sons, Larry, 18. and Leslie, 16, and a 17-year-old I friend on the hunting trip. He left the boys in a pickup truck on a road and went into the forest to look for deer. The boys followed about 10 minutes later and saw a movement in the forest. Larry told the sheriff's deputy he called out, "Is that you, dad?" then called a second and a third time, and finally said, "If you don't speak, I'm going to shout." Larry said he fired, and the 30.06 caliber bullet struck his father in the abdomen. The boys carried the wounded man to the pickup and brought him to the Oakridge Clinic, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Dretsch was a construction em ploye working on the Hills Creek Dam.
