The Pony Kxpress began auspiciously, but only
month Inter it was nearly destroyed.
More than two-thirds of the so-called "suicide"
route lay through hostile Indian country. Sioux,
Cheyennes, Shosnones, A ra pa hoes all resented this
intrusion of their lands. Riders had been instructed
never to stop and fight but to rely on their swifter
horses.
In May, 1860, however, the Paiutes (or Pah-Utes)
Vcnl on the warpath in Utah and Nevada, burning
many stations and stealing stock. Riders arrived at
stations only to find thetn demolished, leaving them
no alternative but to go on to the next,
One of the most famous riders, "Pony Bob" Has
lam, was forced to make a round trip of 380 miles
in 36 continuous hours, carrying the mail nearly on
schedule. For this he was awarded a bonus of $50.
Another time, Haslam came upon a party of 30
armed Pamte warriors. He headed directly toward
them at full speed, revolver in hand. Startled by
this daring, the Indian leader made a peace signal
and let him go through.
The Paiutc War knocked the Pony Express out
of operation for a month and cost the lives of many
good men. It was also a heavy financial blow. Re
placement of stations and livestock cost $75,000.
Haslam's ride was exceeded by one other. At the
age of 15, William Frederick Cody covered a regu
lar 116-mile run through Wyoming, one of the most
dangerous on the route. One time, he found his
relay man had been killed, so he rode 76 miles to
the next station. He immediately turned around
with the return mail, covering a distance of 384
miles. Cody was later to become world famous as
"Buffalo Bill."
