Let us take the year of 1956, when occordinq to the Sheriffs own count, there was an average of 72 prisoners per day tor rhe entire year. I kept an accurate record of the overoge cost per meol to teed each inmate ond was astounded to find that it only cost ,23c per meal or .46c for the two meals per day fed to Klamath County prisoners. The Sheriff or his wife re ceived SI. 00 per day for each inmate, so their net profit was .54c a day tor each. Multiplied by 72 end you have a net profit of SJ8 88 per day. Multiply S38 88 by 365 days and you have o net profit tor tht yeor ot ap proximately SI 4, 190 20. The Sheriff s pay was S5.200.00 in 1956, but his fringe benefits were approximately $14,190.20. Now, I wonder just how long the Taxpayer will permit this situation to go unchecked. If is high time for tht voters to destroy the malignancy which is now destroying his hard earned, ill spent tax dol lar. Certainly it is tht Sheriff's duty to lee that prisoners are amply ted and also the duty of the County Court to pay the food bills, but I don't think it is right tor a Sheriff, a member ot hit family or onvonr else to pocket 54o of the money allotted by tht County Court for tht purpose of feed ing prisoners. Early m 1957 I asked the Sheriff what would be his re actions it someone other then himself or a member of hit family submitted a lower bid for the feedtnq of prisoners and was awarded the contract. Hi promptly replied that he had Ihe keys to tht Jail ond the bidder would bt stopped out side the Jo. I door and no food would be allowed to enter the iHe Jail. After that reply. I (tidn't submit a bid. Go to the Polls on Moy 20 and vote, but on your woy there, esk yourself if you can continue to allow this situation to exist.
