M.irch ifi. lnfif) o Pm 7 A Kin Of Star Committed To School HOLLYWOOD (UPD - Cheryl Crane, the tragedy-ririden daugh ter of glamorous Lana Turner, to day was confined in a county tchool for problem girls hy order of the juvenile court. Juvenile authorities declined to reveal cause of the surpri.se with drawal of the attractive lli-ycar old junior from Beverly Hills pub lic high school last Friday and her immediate confinement in El Retiro School. Cheryl has been a ward of ju venile court since she slabbed to death Johnny Stompanato, an un derworld lijiure and her mother's lover, in Miss Turner's bedroom April 4, 1MB. Miss Turner refused to disclose cause of Cheryl's confinement, but the did deny widely circulating reports that her only daughter was planning to elope with a Bev erly Hills carhop. "Ihere is absolutely no truth that she intended to get married," said the blonde star. "Not one word of truth. "She did dale a carhop, but she also dated many others." Miss Turner described the El Retiro School as an institution for "helping girls who need that ex tra bit of help." "It was agreed by the authori ties, her father (restaurateur Ste phen Crane) and myself that this school is what Cheryl needs at the present lime. It was no kind of definite reason. It was just that at this time this is exactly what shp needs, "How long Cheryl remains there Is up to her as an individual." Superior Judge Allen T. Lynch who originally made Cheryl i ward of the court after Stompana to s slaying, signed the order Fri day committing the tall, fair haired teen-ager to El Retiro. Ivnn Yefcmovlrh Fedotov Russian Navy As Told To I'PI SAX FltANCISCO UTI Al though none of us ever lost hope tnat we would finally be rescued, my experience has made me real ize how good it is to be alive and able In see my wile again. 1 think, if anything, our spirits went up as the days passed. My companions were non-com missioned officer Victor Zigan- shin, 22, and motor machinists Anatoli Krushkovskiy, 21), and Philip Poplavskiy, 20. When we were lirst adrift, we 'bought we would be picked up right away. As time passed, how ever, we realized the danger we were in and it became an adven ture. We fought against the dan ger of death and it made us eager to stay alive. Days Pass Quickly The days went by quickly, strangely enough. Our time was occupied from sunup to sunset fishing, cooking, singing, and reading. Just a few things happened to break the monotony. We sighted three ships and waved and shout ed at them hoping they'd see us But we weren't discouraged when they didn't because we knew we were in the shipping lanes and the fourth, or fifth, or sixth would spot us. We bad some excitement when we tried to gaff a shark with our boat hook, hut the wooden handle broke. This was late in February, a couple of weeks before our rescue. We were about out of food then. but we didn't give up hope. We tried to catch li.sh up to the day we were rescued. Oh, yes, we had a couple of holidays to celebrate. One was Knishkovskiy's 21st birthday on January 27, the other was the So viet Army's birthday on Febru ary 23. Thinks of Wife I thought o my wile and family often and this made mc more de termined to see them again and gave me strength. We all thought it was impossi ble lor people so young to die. We never gave up hope, but knew we couldn t last torever without f DUll. Finally, we boiled our shoe laces for lood. It didn't help much, but they were better than nothing. Although our hunger be came almost unbearable, we nev er lost consciousness nor the abil ity to move about. We were determined to last through March and felt that by then we surely would be rescued. We never fought or quarreled. We were good buddies before the voyage and I doubt that I'll ever have closer friends in my lite. What are my plans, now? First, lo sec my wife and new son, who 1 hope will meet me in Moscow. Then. 1 have about two more years of service belore going back to my civilian ob. I'm the skipper of a little two man harbor boat in Nikolsayevsk. near the mouth of the Amur Riv- er. 1 run errands from ship to shore and ship to ship. 1 think I've become something of an expert on small boats in the past few weeks.
